- Design features no team crest due to Nike holding current USMNT rights
## The Return of Soccer's Most Controversial Kit
Adidas announced the release of the "U.S. denim jersey" on Monday, a throwback-inspired shirt that's reminiscent of the classic away tops worn by the United States men's national team in the 1994 FIFA World Cup. It's a design that defined a moment, and now, more than 30 years later, adidas is bringing it back.
It's the very definition of a cult classic: not truly appreciated in its own moment, but now embraced with almost unconditional love. The timing proves perfect as the jersey arrives just ahead of the U.S. hosting the World Cup for a second time this summer, alongside Mexico and Canada as co-hosts.
## From Player Mockery to Cultural Icon
"It was the longest silence I'd ever heard from our team," remembers forward Eric Wynalda. After the uniform unveiling, the normally loquacious Yanks didn't say a word. When Ramos saw what he'd be wearing against America's archrival, he said, "Even John Harkes cannot make this uniform look good."
The jersey featured a denim print, oddly shaped floating white stars, and bright red trim, and it was made of 100 percent polyester. The Adidas shirt was so popular that it became common streetwear. It was a risk that paid off, as the jersey has since become a cult classic among soccer enthusiasts and fashionistas alike.
## Modern Upgrades with 90s Soul
The 2026 reissue retains that same wild‑at‑heart identity: a washed‑denim effect that looks ripped straight from '94, scattered white stars that refuse to apologise, and sharp red detailing at the collar and sleeves to remind you this is a shirt built on attitude. Lightweight performance fabric replaces the heavy kit of the '90s, bringing comfort, movement and street‑ready versatility into the conversation.
"In the U.S. Denim jersey, we set out to capture the side of American soccer that has always been distinctive and original," explains Inigo Turner, Design Director at adidas Football. "This design leans into that spirit with bold graphics, fearless colour and a belief that the game here should look and feel like it belongs to the people."
## The Missing Piece
The main difference to the 1994 away shirt is that you won't find the federation's badge on the chest. Adidas owns the copyright to the iconic "Denim" design pattern, but they do not own the rights to the team. Therefore, we get the manufacturer logo and the design, but no team badge.
Former USMNT star Alexi Lalas, who played at the '94 World Cup and wore the original shirt, is among those to model the new collection. Diehard fans of USMNT, retro jerseys, or both have long-championed the Away shirt once worn by the likes of Mike Lapper, Cobi Jones, and Claudio Reyna, but it's been largely-overshadowed by the National Team's relationship with Nike since the mid-to-late-'90s.
## Complete Collection Drops Tomorrow
The Denim Shorts mirror the shirt's star‑covered print, creating a full match‑fit silhouette straight out of the '90s. The Denim Track Top brings contrast panelling, star graphics and hits of red at the collar and cuffs, blurring lines between retro warm‑up gear and modern‑day terracewear. Completing the drop is the Denim Cap, a cleaner, more subtle nod to the theme, finished with embroidered branding and miniature star details.
Classics like the Samba, Superstar, and Jabbar Hi are reworked with similar materials as the headlining jersey while also boasting star motifs in different tones. Product begins rolling out globally on Tuesday, March 10, via adidas.com. The U.S. Denim Jersey drop will be available on the official Adidas and select retailers like DSG and Fanatics at 11 a.m. ET on Tuesday.
## The Legacy Lives On
Adidas' decision to bring back the denim-look USMNT jersey underscores the lasting cultural impact of that 1994 squad and its unique kit. It spawned a professional league in the U.S. and cultivated a generation of soccer fans - millions of whom have since come to love the game. It remains, to this day, the best-attended World Cup in the competition's history.
