KAPITAL NAMES ITS CENTURY DENIM BIZEN AND KARASU

Kakishibu tannin turns Kapital's Century Denim No.5 the color of wet clay left out in the sun. Sumi ink turns No.7 close to black. On September 6, Kapital named that pairing Bizen and Karasu, after an eight century old pottery town in Okayama and the Japanese word for crow, and skipped the wordplay it usually reaches for.

The brand has spent 2026 turning idioms into collection names. This time it picked two nouns and let the dye chemistry carry the rest. That is the more interesting choice, because Bizen and Kapital's own Century Denim line have been making the same colors for different reasons for years, one through fire and one through fermented persimmon.

Persimmon Tannin Turns No.5 Orange, Sumi Ink Turns No.7 Grey

Kapital dyes Century Denim No.5 with kakishibu, a tannin pressed from unripe persimmons and fermented for at least two years before it touches cotton. That dye oxidizes with light and air into a deepening orange brown, while No.7 uses sumi ink to push the same denim toward ash grey and near black.

Both codes carry a BS mark stitched into this drop, added onto the S suffix Kapital has stamped on Century Denim codes since the line's earliest 5S and 7S releases to flag the sashiko reinforcement. The added B appears to nod to Bizen without spelling it out anywhere on the tag. The sashiko stitching in each piece is undyed indigo cotton thread, which lightens with every wear session while the dyed ground keeps darkening, so the contrast that defines Century Denim only shows up on a body, never on a hanger.

Bizen Ware Has Fired This Same Color for Centuries

Bizen is a city in Okayama that has fired unglazed stoneware in wood kilns since the Kamakura period, and its clay turns the same range of orange red to near black that Kapital reaches with kakishibu and sumi. No glaze or added pigment makes that color. The iron content in Bizen's clay reacts to direct flame during firings that can run longer than a week, producing the reddish flash collectors call hiiro, ash speckling called goma, and smoky dark patches called sangiri where the flame gets starved of oxygen.

Kojima sits in the same Setouchi denim belt where Kapital's 1985 founding began with faithful reproductions of mid century American workwear. Bizen is one of Japan's six ancient kiln towns, alongside Shigaraki and Tokoname, and its pottery sits in tea ceremony collections the way a signed canvas sits in a gallery, valued for what the fire did by accident rather than for a hand painted design.

Four Factories Sit Between Kojima and Hiroshima

Kapital builds Century Denim across four separate factories split between Okayama and Hiroshima prefectures. One spins the cotton, one handles the kakishibu and sumi dyeing, one weaves the cloth, and one finishes it before it becomes a garment. That chain has stayed in place since Kapital first teased a four factory supply chain for Boro Labo, its research arm run out of the same Kojima workshops, two months before Bizen and Karasu shipped.

Karasu, the crow half of the pairing, does not need a factory explanation. Kapital tagged the release Okayama and Setouchi directly in the post, tying both No.5 and No.7 to the region's water and light rather than to a studio concept.

Kapital Usually Puns. Bizen and Karasu Do Not.

Kapital named its FW2026 outerwear run Great Port Kountry by swapping one character into a Japanese idiom for street gossip, and named an earlier denim tease Sukaboro by fusing sukajan and boro. Beautiful Boro Borough folded the same repair method into a borough pun earlier this year. Kapital has leaned on wordplay before, turning that same street gossip idiom into a collection name and denim into a portmanteau within the same year.

Bizen and Karasu break that pattern. Both are literal, a pottery town and a bird, with no pun folded in, which reads as a brand treating the dye chemistry as the whole pitch instead of the wrapper around it. No.5 and No.7 do not need a nickname to sell. A tannin fermented for two years and a kiln fired for a week already gave them one.
