DAEWON SONG ALREADY STARRED IN THE GLENBURN'S LAUNCH FILM

Seven months before his name went on the box, Daewon Song was already inside the story. In February, adidas Skateboarding introduced the Glenburn with Parallels, a two person film that sent Mark Suciu to Song's own driveway while Song nursed an injury. They dug through his archive, cruised Channel Street and the OG Alta Vista curb, and never once mentioned that Song would eventually get his own version of the shoe he was quietly promoting.

That version landed September 4. adidas calls it Earth Strata, an all brown leather build with a gum sole, EVO cushioning, and a dual layered suede toe box built, in adidas's own words, for complete board feel through a plimsole inspired outsole. It is Song's third documented adidas signature colorway since 2016, on a shoe he had already appeared in before it carried his name.

The Outsole Copies a Shape That Predates Skateboarding

A plimsole is a canvas gym shoe from the 1830s, built with a thin rubber sole meant for walking, not ollieing. adidas built the Glenburn's low profile base on that same silhouette and pitched the whole shoe as a terrace and skate hybrid when it debuted in February at 75 dollars. Song's Earth Strata keeps that base and changes the surface, a brown leather build, a gum outsole, and a crew yellow accent that retailers list under style code KZ8777.

The shoe released online at adidas.com/Glenburn and in skate shops on one release day, echoing the two channel rollout adidas ran a week earlier for the Lisbon colorway that Tim Debauche, Jarrad Carlin, Lau Willems and Lilli Werner pushed through a YouTube tour edit. Between that debut, a grey carbon blue teaser, a Thrasher x AFA pairing in June, the Lisbon Fall run, a tan leather build released September 3, and now Earth Strata, the Glenburn has changed its face at least six times in seven months. It arrives about a month after adidas reinforced the Samba ADV's toe for its own skate team, a second construction upgrade this year.

Song Wore the Korean Flag on an Adidas Shoe Once Already

Earth Strata is not the first time Song has used an adidas outsole to say where he is from. His first ever adidas signature colorway, on the Adi Ease in 2016, split the sole into asymmetric blue and red halves lifted directly from the Korean flag.

Song was born in Seoul on February 19, 1975, moved to Gardena, California as a child, and was skating in front of Rodney Mullen's camera by the late 1980s. Thrasher named him Skater of the Year in 2006, fourteen years after World Industries' Love Child gave him his breakout part. Almost Skateboards, the company he co founded with Mullen in 2003, still sells his signature deck alongside the shoe adidas now builds around him.

Three Days Separated Two Korean Stories in Two Verticals

Three days before Earth Strata went live, adidas Originals launched its JENNIE collection worldwide, fronted by the Korean member of Blackpink and built around a squared toe Superstar rework. Neither release credits the other, and adidas has not framed them as a pair anywhere in its own marketing.

A fifty one year old skate lifer and a K pop headliner landed Korean rooted adidas product in the same seven day window, on opposite ends of the company's roster, without a shared campaign or a shared name attached. One brand, two verticals, one country of origin surfacing twice by accident rather than design.

Every Glenburn Colorway Still Owes Its Existence to One Film

Every colorway the Glenburn has worn since February traces back to a shoe that launched without a signature name on it at all. Parallels introduced the silhouette through Song and Suciu's friendship, not through a product photo, and the shoe has since picked up a Thrasher collaboration, a Lisbon team trip, and now Song's own name.

Earth Strata is Song's third named adidas colorway in ten years and the first to arrive after he had already fronted the shoe once. He spent February talking about spots and injuries on camera for a shoe with no colorway to sell yet. He spent September watching that same shoe sell itself in his own colors.
