PRADA GIVES BARRY JENKINS HIS FASHION DIRECTING DEBUT

Barry Jenkins has never directed a fashion campaign before. Prada handed him one anyway, Fall Winter 2026's "Simple Stories," and cast Hunter Schafer, Troye Sivan, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Chen Haoyu across separate, unconnected domestic vignettes rather than a single narrative through line. The caption sold this as a Troye Sivan and Chen Haoyu moment. The actual news is that Prada's co creative directors, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons, went to an Oscar winning film director with zero prior campaign credits and asked him to shoot quiet, ordinary scenes instead of a runway recap.

That choice tells you more about where luxury fashion is recruiting its storytellers than either name in the caption does.

Barry Jenkins Has Never Directed a Fashion Campaign Before

Jenkins won the Best Picture Oscar for Moonlight, made If Beale Street Could Talk, and directed The Underground Railroad for television, a filmography built entirely on intimate, interior character studies, not a single fashion credit anywhere in it. Simple Stories leans directly into that skill set, Troye Sivan glancing into a mirror, Chen Haoyu reading by a window, each cast member isolated in their own scene rather than sharing a single set piece the way a typical group campaign would stage it. Prada did not hire Jenkins to shoot clothes well. It hired him to shoot people convincingly, the exact gap a filmmaker fills that a fashion photographer usually cannot.

Ferdinando Verderi Already Runs Prada's Campaign Machine

Prada did not need a new director. Ferdinando Verderi has served as the house's regular campaign creative director since 2020, building the Spring Summer 2021 Dialogues concept, the Fall 2021 Sotheby's benefit auction campaign, and this year's Spring 2026 work with photographer Anne Collier. Verderi's system is already in place and functioning. Bringing in Jenkins on top of that apparatus, rather than replacing it, means Prada wanted a specific narrative sensibility layered onto an existing machine, not a fix for something broken.

None of the Four Leads Are Professional Models

Schafer, Sivan, Harrison Jr, and Chen Haoyu share one qualification above their individual fame: none of them work primarily as models. Prada has been building this pattern all year. Jake Gyllenhaal fronted Prada Linea Rossa's New Heights campaign shot on actual Arctic ice rather than a studio, and Louis Partridge's Days of Summer eyewear campaign leaned on photographer David Sims's reputation as much as Partridge's own. Chen Haoyu herself became a Prada ambassador in February 2025, a singer and actress who broke through winning the third season of the Chinese talent show Chinese Million Star in 2014 and later starred in the 2022 drama Home Coming, not a background built in modeling.

Sivan carries a longer Prada history than the caption credits him for, having fronted the house's earlier Days of Summer run and worn Prada to the Met Gala in looks that referenced Robert Mapplethorpe's photography, a musician the house keeps returning to specifically because his own image already reads as considered. Simple Stories is not a departure from Prada's actor over model pattern. It is the pattern's most concentrated version yet, four working actors and musicians, zero professional models, one film director assigned to make all four read as people rather than product displays.

Miu Miu Is Doing the Same Thing Down the Hall

Credit where it belongs. Prada is not the only Miuccia Prada house running this play this season. Miu Miu's own Fall Winter 2026 campaign, photographed by Zoe Ghertner and directed by Renell Medrano, framed Hailey Bieber and Xiao Wen Ju's clothing as armor and exposure rather than product, the same instinct to hire a director with a specific visual thesis over a straightforward fashion photographer. Willem Dafoe's own Jacquemus placement inside A Rabbit's Foot magazine this same week runs on the identical logic at a smaller brand, borrowing an outsider's credibility rather than manufacturing its own.

The trend is bigger than one house. What makes Prada's version notable is how far it reached to prove the point, an Oscar winner with no fashion campaign history, brought in specifically because he had never done this before, and asked to shoot a mirror glance and a page of a book with the same seriousness he once gave Moonlight's final scene.
