Questions people ask about Tate
What is Tate?
Tate is the UK's family of national art galleries: Tate Modern and Tate Britain in London, Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives. Tate Modern, housed in a converted 1947 power station on Bankside, is the flagship for contemporary art and drew 5.8 million visitors in 2023.
How do you visit Tate Modern?
Entry to the collection displays is free, so you can walk in during opening hours on London's Bankside, across the Millennium Bridge from St Paul's. Major temporary exhibitions are ticketed, and booking ahead online is the safe route for those.
What is the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern?
The Turbine Hall is the vast entrance space kept from the building's power station days, used for large scale commissioned installations. Its commissions are among the most significant public art projects in the world and are free to see.
Who designed Tate Modern?
Herzog and de Meuron converted the former Bankside power station into Tate Modern, which opened in 2000, and later added the Blavatnik Building extension. The same architects remain fixtures of major museum and landmark projects worldwide.
Where does the Tate name come from?
From Henry Tate, the sugar merchant whose collection and funding established the original gallery, which opened in 1897 as the National Gallery of British Art. The name carried over as the institution grew into today's four gallery network.
