ARTHUR JAFA'S I AM TONY TAKES TWO NEW MUSEUM FLOORS SEPT 24

Jay Z needed a director to make grief look historical for the 4:44 video in 2017. He called Arthur Jafa. Nine years later, the fine art world is catching up to what hip hop already knew, and Arthur Jafa, I Am Tony gives that same director two entire floors of the New Museum, opening September 24, 2026.

Fine art is not discovering Jafa here. It is finally cataloguing him, four decades after he started cutting film for a living.

September 24, 2026. Two Floors. No Half Measures.

I Am Tony opens September 24, 2026 and runs through January 4, 2027 inside the New Museum on the Bowery. The museum is calling it the largest survey ever mounted of Jafa's practice, spanning two full floors instead of the single gallery run most living artists get.

The show pairs a new work premiere with Jafa's two most cited films, Love Is the Message The Message Is Death from 2016 and The White Album from 2019, alongside recent paintings, large scale video installations and a run of sculptural and photographic pieces. A fully illustrated catalog co published by the New Museum and Phaidon Press accompanies the opening, the kind of object that turns a museum show into a permanent citation.

82 Million Dollars Bought Two Extra Floors

Jafa gets two floors because the building finally has them. The New Museum reopened in March 2026 after an 82 million dollar expansion designed by OMA partners Rem Koolhaas and Shohei Shigematsu, adding 60,000 square feet and roughly doubling the museum's usable floor area against the original 2007 SANAA building.

Finally Offline covered that reopening and the OMA addition when it landed, and the math tracks now. A museum that just doubled its footprint needed a show big enough to prove the extra square footage was worth building. A two floor Jafa survey, the first of its scale anywhere, is that proof.

Massimiliano Gioni Named the Show After a Drummer

I Am Tony is named for Tony Williams, the jazz drummer who redefined rhythm playing alongside Miles Davis in the 1960s, not for Jafa himself. Curators Massimiliano Gioni and Gary Carrion Murayari chose the reference because the title is meant to chart how Jafa's filmic language developed, its syncopation, repetition and texture drawing on the same formal qualities critics associate with Williams behind a drum kit.

That is a curatorial argument, not a coincidence. Jafa has spent four decades editing footage the way a drummer works a kit, cutting on the beat instead of the frame, and a survey built around a musician's name is the clearest signal yet that the New Museum sees his image making as a form of composition.

A Ten Person Gospel Choir Scored the Video First

Love Is the Message The Message Is Death runs seven minutes and twenty five seconds and is set entirely to Kanye West's Ultralight Beam, its verses carried by Chance the Rapper, Kelly Price and a ten person gospel choir. Jafa cuts that gospel structure against footage of Martin Luther King Jr, James Baldwin, Barack Obama, Beyonce and LeBron James, treating black American history like a sample.

The White Album followed in 2019 and won the Golden Lion for best artist at the 58th Venice Biennale, the festival's top individual prize. Jafa had already proven he could do this in music video form. He co directed Jay Z's 4:44 with Elissa Blount Moorhead and Malik Hassan Sayeed through their collective TNEG in 2017, cutting a young boy singing Nina Simone against archival Eartha Kitt footage. The museum survey is the same editing brain, just given two floors instead of eight minutes.

Streetwear Already Knew This Before the Museum Did

The New Museum has been folding street level image making into its walls longer than this survey suggests. Finally Offline reported that Futura's collaborative graffiti work with Neighborhood in Tokyo sits in the same institution's permanent collection, proof the Bowery has been collecting outside the gallery system's usual boundaries for years before this expansion.

Jafa fits that same lineage from the other direction. He shot Daughters of the Dust in 1991, winning a Sundance award for the cinematography, then Spike Lee's Crooklyn in 1994, before hip hop's biggest names started calling him for videos instead of features. The White Album already has its Golden Lion. The Phaidon catalog already exists. What I Am Tony proves is that a two floor museum survey was the one credential left to collect, and the institution needed a bigger building before it could hand it over.
