CHRISTIE'S MAPS A FOUR STOP NEW YORK ART SEASON

Christie's reported its strongest first half in five years. Four point five billion dollars in worldwide sales, and none of that number shows up in the auction house's latest Instagram post. Instead, Christie's sent its followers on a walking tour of four New York exhibitions and did not mention a price once.

Start uptown with Taryn Simon. Head downtown for Surrealism and Arthur Jafa. Cross the river for Cezanne, Modigliani and Van Gogh. That is the itinerary Christie's editorial desk built, reading closer to a museum newsletter than a sale catalog, and every stop on it is real, dated, and worth tracing.

September 18. One Rotunda, Forty Two New Works.

The Guggenheim opens Taryn Simon's Father Country I Do Love You on September 18, running through March 14, 2027. It is the first time the museum has handed its entire rotunda to a single photography based artist, and the largest debut of new work in the Guggenheim's history. Simon spent nearly a decade building the piece, 42 works spanning photography, text, video and sculpture, tracing the real career of an unnamed federal agent who spent years as a middleman collecting evidence for other people to piece together. Visitors choose their own path through it. There is no wall text telling them the correct order.

Arthur Jafa Takes Two Floors on the Bowery

Downtown, the New Museum opens I Am Tony on September 24, the largest survey of Arthur Jafa's work ever staged, running through January 4, 2027. The show is named for the jazz drummer Tony Williams and fills two floors of the museum's recently expanded Bowery building. Jafa has spent three decades building a practice out of film, sculpture and archival footage that asks what it means to picture Black life at the speed film actually moves. A survey this size, in a building this new, is the New Museum betting its expansion on him specifically.

Surrealist Auction Sales Are Up 131 Percent Since 2018

The second downtown stop is smaller. Surrealism on Paper opens September 2 at Nicola Vassell Gallery in Chelsea and runs through October 24, a tighter show built around works on paper rather than the movement's famous canvases. Finally Offline reported in January that Classic Surrealist auction sales climbed 131.6 percent between 2018 and 2024, the number that sat behind the National Trust's own surrealist revival at London Art Fair. Christie's sells the movement's biggest names in its own salesrooms. Here it is pointing collectors toward a gallery show it does not own a single lot in.

Fifty Pearlman Works Cross the East River

The last stop asks for a subway ride. The Brooklyn Museum opens Cezanne to Modigliani, Gifts of Modern Art from the Pearlman Collection on October 2, running through April 18, 2027. More than fifty works from Henry and Rose Pearlman's collection go on view, Cezanne and Degas and Gauguin and Manet and Modigliani and Pissarro and Soutine and Toulouse Lautrec and Van Gogh, gathered by two collectors who bought with their own eyes instead of a committee. It is the only stop on Christie's list that sits outside Manhattan, and the only one still five weeks from opening.

A Salesroom Chasing Readers, Not Just Bidders

Christie's own numbers explain the strategy better than the itinerary does. Nearly half of its new clients this year are millennials or Gen Z, and 63 percent of first time buyers came in through an online sale before they ever raised a paddle in a room. A company recruiting that audience needs somewhere to put them before they are ready to bid, and a four stop museum guide does that job for free. It is the same logic record labels use when they run editorial instead of just tour dates, or the one behind Alex Knost's solo show at Adler Smith Gallery, where a surfboard shaper's gallery debut did more to build an audience than any single sale could. Content now, commerce later. Christie's just applied it to the art world's own institutions instead of its own inventory.

Four exhibitions, four different opening dates between September 2 and October 2, and Christie's did not sell a single one of them. That is the tell. A house that just reported its best first half in five years is still giving away free editorial to build the next decade of buyers, using the Guggenheim's rotunda and a Brooklyn collection it had no hand in assembling as the bait. Early, not gimmick. The paddle comes later.
