KAWS HANGS NEXT TO LICHTENSTEIN AND HARING IN VIENNA

KAWS. Art & Comix closes at Vienna's Albertina Modern on September 27, and the museum is not billing it as a KAWS retrospective. It is a survey of comic language inside postwar art, and KAWS shares the wall with Roy Lichtenstein, Keith Haring, Jean Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf instead of standing alone in a room named after him. That placement is the argument this piece is testing: that KAWS has finished the move from street artist to art historical figure, at least on the wall, even if the saleroom has not caught up.

The Wall Text Puts Him Next to Lichtenstein and Haring, Not Banksy

Albertina Modern built ART&COMIX around a specific argument: that cartoon language moved from newsprint into fine art across six decades, and KAWS is one stop on that timeline rather than its endpoint. The show, running since April 3, pairs KAWS' sculpture, painting and works on paper against Lichtenstein's comic panel paintings and Haring's subway drawings, the kind of company a museum only offers an artist it considers historically settled. Walk the galleries and the recurring image is the crossed out eyes, XX marks lifted from cartoon death and stamped across otherwise recognizable cartoon faces, Companion figures rendered in the artist's flattened, hard edged line. KAWS built that vocabulary defacing bus shelter ads in the 1990s before moving it onto canvas and bronze; Albertina hangs that lineage next to Lichtenstein's own comic panel enlargements from three decades earlier, letting a visitor trace the crossed out eyes back to a Ben Day dot. A group show framing does something a solo retrospective cannot: it argues KAWS belongs in the sentence with those names, not just next to them on a gallery wall.

He Already Told Everyone to See the Haring Show Next Door

KAWS endorsed a Keith Haring exhibition at the Brant Foundation back in March, when that show opened focusing on Haring's breakthrough years in the early 1980s East Village. Six months later, Albertina Modern makes a similar connection formally, hanging KAWS and Haring in the same institutional conversation about comic aesthetics moving into galleries. KAWS did not curate his own place in that lineage. He just publicly agreed with it months before a museum made it official.

The Kaws Album sold for 14.8 million dollars at Sotheby's Hong Kong in 2019, still the artist's auction record seven years later. Kaws canvases have averaged 71,046 dollars at auction over the past year, a fraction of that peak, even as institutional recognition keeps compounding: a first Korea museum show in July, a first West Coast museum show at SFMOMA that closed in May, and now a European survey placing him alongside the artists who built the category. A third market runs alongside both: Uniqlo made him its first Artist in Residence in September 2025, and a second Kaws Universe UT collection lands September 14 with three new characters retailing at mass market prices. Three tiers, one artist: a 14.8 million dollar auction ceiling, a 71,046 dollar canvas average, and a t shirt anyone can buy at a Uniqlo register the week the Vienna show closes. Museums are treating KAWS like an established figure. Buyers at auction are pricing him more like a strong secondary market brand than a blue chip name.

Vienna Closes September 27. Seoul Runs Through December.

Two institutional shows overlap right now on two continents. ART&COMIX ends its run at Albertina Modern on September 27, closing out nearly six months in Vienna. Friends and Neighbors, KAWS' first institutional solo exhibition in Korea, opened at Space K Seoul in July and runs through December 27, twenty new paintings and sculptures built around the people closest to him, not the comic history Vienna is tracing. One show argues where he came from. The other argues where he is now. Neither one needs the auction market to agree before it opens the doors.

A museum putting KAWS next to Lichtenstein and Haring is a bigger institutional bet than any auction house has made on him since 2019, and it is happening in Vienna while Seoul runs a second show simultaneously. The market can catch up or it cannot. The wall text has already decided.
