UNDERCOVER'S FW26 PIECES REACH DOVER STREET MARKET LA

Undercover's FW26 menswear collection is called 100% KHAOTIQUE NOIR, and Jun Takahashi built it from silk padded coats, flight jackets and Cindy Sherman's film stills printed straight onto jersey. This week, select pieces of it reached Dover Street Market Los Angeles, one of the few outside stores Takahashi lets carry his own label.

That the pieces sell through DSMNY's site rather than a Los Angeles storefront says as much about how Undercover distributes itself as the garments say about how Takahashi wants a customer dressed this winter. Takahashi has run Undercover out of Tokyo since 1993, the same year he opened the Nowhere store in Harajuku with a young Nigo, and he still treats every outside stockist as an exception, not a default channel.

Silk Padding Instead of Down, Cindy Sherman Instead of Camo

100% KHAOTIQUE NOIR runs on silk padded coats built from Japanese and Italian textiles in place of down insulation, plus flight jackets, layered tank tops and trousers made with outdoor label Gramicci. Cindy Sherman's self portrait film stills appear as jacquard patches and direct photo prints across the jersey pieces, Takahashi's third use of her work since Spring Summer 2018.

Sherman shot those stills before streetwear existed as a retail category, and Takahashi treats them less as a print than as a second designer in the room. The Gramicci trousers keep the drawstring waist and gusseted crotch of a hiking pant, dropped into a collection that otherwise reads as funeral tailoring. Stress free wear is the phrase Takahashi has used for the season: premium fabric, relaxed cut, opulent instead of dark for its own sake. Hauser and Wirth, Sherman's representing gallery, is credited on the collection's own materials, the kind of clearance line that separates a licensed print from a knockoff of one.

A George Cox x Undercover Cindy Sherman Derby from this collection already sells on DSMNY's site, the George Cox Cindy Sherman Derby released September 5 in three colorways with an EVA sole swapped in for George Cox's usual crepe. Ready to wear reaching Dover Street Market Los Angeles this week is a separate step; the West Coast store now carries garments, not only the collaboration shoe that crossed over first.

Three months ago Undercover's approach to outside retail ran the opposite way. Its Pre Fall Women's collection released July 11 through undercoverism.com and Takahashi's own stores exclusively, skipping third party wholesale by design. The men's pre fall pieces reversed that by July 30, when Undercover's pre fall pieces reached Dover Street Market New York, one of a small number of outside doors carrying the label at all. DSM LA taking FW26 mainline pieces now stretches that short list to a second coast.

Fifteen Thousand Square Feet, Not One Los Angeles Checkout

Dover Street Market Los Angeles occupies 15,000 square feet at 606 to 608 Imperial Street in the Arts District, two adjoined concrete buildings Rei Kawakubo designed with cofounder Adrian Joffe, not Undercover. The store already stocks Stüssy, Simone Rocha and Kidill's FW26 Heaven collection alongside Comme des Garçons, the house Kawakubo runs herself, plus a 40 seat Rose Bakery.

Every item from the Los Angeles floor, Undercover included, checks out through shop-us.doverstreetmarket.com, DSMNY's site; Los Angeles has no separate cart of its own. Vaquera and Matières Fécales landed at that address this same week and pointed shoppers to that identical New York checkout, so the routing is a pattern on this account, not an accident tied to one brand.

Buy the Coat, Skip Waiting on a Price List

DSM LA is carrying select pieces, not the full 100% KHAOTIQUE NOIR line, which makes this a scouting trip more than a complete collection drop. Takahashi has now let a single object, the George Cox Derby, travel outside his own stores before the rest of the range followed; the Cindy Sherman jersey pieces and the Gramicci trousers are worth handling in person before DSMNY's site sells through them.

Buy in Los Angeles if the silk padding and a third Cindy Sherman collaboration are the point, because Takahashi does not repeat an archive reference the following season.
