UNDERCOVER PUTS GEORGE COX ON A THIRD CINDY SHERMAN SHOE

George Cox has built the 4 Eyelet Derby the same way since the 1950s, a leather upper on a crepe sole, the shoe that teddy boys and later punks turned into a uniform piece. UNDERCOVER just swapped that sole for lightweight EVA and put Cindy Sherman's face on the leather. That trade tells you more about this release than the artist credit does.

Jun Takahashi's 100% KHAOTIQUE NOIR Fall Winter 2026 menswear collection reaches its footwear on September 5, and the shoe is not a guest spot. It is the third time Takahashi has built a full release around Sherman's self portrait work, and the first time that partnership has landed on a George Cox last.

UNDERCOVER releases the George Cox x UNDERCOVER shoe Saturday, September 5, closing out the rollout for 100% KHAOTIQUE NOIR. The design reinterprets George Cox's 4 Eyelet Derby through Takahashi's own eye, running Cindy Sherman's self portrait photography across the upper the same way the label has already used her work on jacquard hem patches and jersey tees earlier in the same collection. Every print is credited to the artist and Hauser and Wirth, her representing gallery, the same credit line UNDERCOVER attached to its earlier Cindy Sherman pieces from this collection. The shoe is not a side project. It is the same artwork moving from a hem to a shoe.

Lightweight EVA Where Crepe Used to Be

George Cox built the 4 Eyelet Derby's reputation on a thick crepe sole, the rubbery, ridged construction that gave the original creeper its silhouette and its subculture credibility. UNDERCOVER's version drops that sole for lightweight EVA, a foam compound that cuts weight and changes the shoe's whole stance underfoot. That is not a small swap. Crepe is what made George Cox's shoe read as a piece of history the moment you saw it from across a room. EVA reads as a 2026 decision, built for a customer who wants the silhouette without carrying the original's weight, literally.

Jun Takahashi Has Done This Before

This is not UNDERCOVER's first pass at George Cox's Derby. The two have worked the same last through a Patti Smith referencing People Have the Power release, a butterfly print built from digitally printed 18th century painting elements, and a Twin Peaks referencing Wonderful and Strange collection. Each version kept the silhouette identical and changed only the surface, which is the whole method. Takahashi is not redesigning a shoe every season. He is running one shoe through a rotation of references and letting the print carry the story.

Hauser and Wirth Signs Off on the Print

Every use of Sherman's photography in this collection, the hem patches, the jersey tees, now the Derby, carries the same Hauser and Wirth credit line, confirming the gallery cleared the artist's self portrait work for a third straight application. That is a meaningfully different arrangement than a brand printing a photographer's name for hype. UNDERCOVER's FW26 pre collection has already reached Dover Street Market New York on limited outside placement, but 100% KHAOTIQUE NOIR itself, footwear included, is staying inside UNDERCOVER's own retail and undercoverism.com, the same channel discipline the label used for its Pre Fall Women's release in July.

Black, Blue, White. No Fourth Option.

The Derby releases in exactly three colorways, BLACK, BLUE and WHITE, no seasonal fourth option and no regional exclusive. That restraint matches how UNDERCOVER has run this entire Sherman era, three collections, three real collaborations, no filler drops in between to dilute the credit. A crepe sole classic reworked in EVA for a photographer whose gallery has now cleared her work three times is not a hype shoe chasing a name. It is Takahashi treating a nearly 70 year old silhouette as a canvas he keeps coming back to, and the fact that Sherman keeps saying yes is the actual headline.
