UNDERCOVER PUTS CINDY SHERMAN ON JACQUARD PATCHES FOR AW26

Photo print tees don't usually carry a gallery credit line in the fine print. UNDERCOVER's do. The AW26 menswear collection, titled 100% KHAOTIQUE NOIR, builds Sherman's self portrait photography into the clothes two ways. The second is direct photo print, applied to the jersey pieces sold alongside the runway looks. Placing an artwork at the hem rather than the torso changes how a garment reads on a body. Takahashi first worked with her for the Spring Summer 2018 womenswear collection, then again for Spring Summer 2020 menswear, a show titled I Hold A Beast, an Angel and a Madman in Me that rendered her Untitled Film Stills as embroidery across blazers, shirts, and bags. KHAOTIQUE NOIR is the third pass, not a one off licensing deal, and the repetition matters more than any single patch. A label that returns to the same artist three times across eight years is building a relationship, not renting an image for one season.

Sherman earned that relationship the hard way. Her reputation rests on Untitled Film Stills, seventy black and white self portraits made between 1977 and 1980, each one restaging a fictional woman from midcentury film noir and B movies, a housewife here, a runaway there, always Sherman herself behind the camera and in front of it. The work reads as pop culture pastiche at a glance and as a study of constructed identity underneath, which is exactly the kind of layered image a menswear label built on disguise would want stitched into its clothes. Sherman's standing in the art market, the kind that puts her name near work landing in institutions the size of a rebuilt LACMA's sculpture garden, is what makes the Hauser and Wirth credit line worth printing at all.

Buy the jacquard pieces if the construction argument above holds up under your own inspection, because a hem patch licensed through Hauser and Wirth is a different object than a bootleg print. Skip the tees specifically if you already own SS20 embroidery pieces, since photo print jersey is a lower craft tier than that season's needlework.
