TARIK SKUBAL'S NO. 29 JOINS A ROTATION WITH FOUR ACES

Three prospects for two months of pitching. That is the trade the Dodgers just made, and Tarik Skubal is already standing in the dugout wearing No. 29 to prove it.

Los Angeles agreed to acquire the two time American League Cy Young winner from the Detroit Tigers on August 1, sending outfielder Zyhir Hope and right handers River Ryan and Brady Smith back to Detroit. Skubal is a pending free agent this offseason, so the Dodgers are renting a Cy Young arm for roughly nine regular season starts plus whatever the postseason adds. That is a steep price for a rental, and the front office made it anyway.

This is not a need trade. Los Angeles already had the best rotation ERA in the majors before Skubal packed a bag for Los Angeles.

August 1. Three Prospects. Nine Starts.

The Dodgers sent Zyhir Hope, River Ryan and Brady Smith to Detroit on August 1 for Tarik Skubal, and Skubal is a pending free agent, which makes this a rental in the most literal sense. Los Angeles is paying real young talent for what could be nine or ten regular season starts before he can walk into another team's clubhouse in November. Skubal showed up in Dodgers gear at Dodger Stadium the next day, No. 29 stitched across the back, and was scheduled to make his first start Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

31 and 10, a 2.30 ERA, Back to Back Cy Youngs

Skubal is not a rental in the ordinary sense. He is the best pitcher available in either league this season. He went 18 and 4 with a 2.39 ERA and 228 strikeouts in 2024, a unanimous Cy Young. He followed it with a 13 and 6 record, a 2.21 ERA and 241 strikeouts in 2025, leading all of baseball in walks per nine innings. Combined, that is 31 wins, 10 losses, a 2.30 ERA and 469 strikeouts across 387 innings and a third since 2024. Los Angeles added him to a rotation of Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow and Shohei Ohtani, the same roster that produced the first Japanese born player to reach 300 home runs three weeks earlier. That rotation already led the majors in ERA before Skubal ever threw a pitch for it.

Zyhir Hope Was the Best Bat Detroit Had Coming

Detroit did not give Skubal away for nothing. Zyhir Hope was hitting .293 with a .369 on base percentage and a .530 slugging mark in his first full season at Double A, with 23 home runs and 87 RBIs. River Ryan posted a 1.33 ERA across four starts in his 2024 debut, then missed all of 2025 recovering from Tommy John surgery and has been sidelined twice more with hamstring trouble in 2026. Brady Smith is the depth arm attached to the deal. Detroit chose three unproven arms and bats over one guaranteed ace, because the ace was already walking out the door in November.

The Tigers Already Sold the Fleece. Now They Lost the Arm.

Detroit's own merchandise machine was running before this trade ever closed. Palace Skateboards released a second Detroit Tigers capsule in July, heavier fleece than its 2022 run, same 313 area code branding stitched through it; FO broke down what the tag actually reflects. That collection sold the city and the team as one identity. It came with no guarantee the roster behind the logo would still have its best arm by August. Within the month, Detroit traded away the pitcher whose name gave that identity its weight.

"Passionately Disagree." Friedman on the Ruining Baseball Question

Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman was asked directly whether trades like this one are ruining competitive baseball. Passionately disagree, he said. Friedman explained the front office does not chase every available star, only the ones that can shift championship odds, and Skubal cleared that bar. The market already prices the logo at a premium separate from the roster attached to it. Fanatics and KAWS put the Dodgers mark on a 650 dollar jersey line that debuted at Fanatics Fest in New York on July 16, timed to a Yankees series at Yankee Stadium; FO covered the collectibles run when it dropped. Skubal's No. 29 just became the newest version of the same asset.

Call it early. The Dodgers are the favorite to win it all, and Skubal is the reason their rotation now has five arms that could start Game 1 for another team. He wears No. 29 for maybe nine starts. If Los Angeles wins in October, three prospects and one jersey number will look cheap. If they do not, this was an expensive rental with excellent merchandising.
