FRANK OCEAN'S WITHER FINDS A NEW SETTING IN TEARS

Frank Ocean's “Wither” follows a man through the Georgia landscape in Dexter Navy's film for Tears. Wither arrives with its own history

“Wither” belongs to the quieter side of Ocean's catalogue. Alex G contributed guitar and Jazmine Sullivan contributed vocals, according to the credits reported when *Endless* arrived in August 2016. Those names matter to the scale of the recording: this is a song built around voices and a guitar part, brought into a campaign that spends time on houses, trees and people passing through them.

The earlier Tears campaign report followed P3ezy's repeat casting and the production credits. Looking at the film through Ocean changes the centre of attention. The question becomes what a familiar recording does when it is detached from the images that first accompanied it.

Georgia supplies the second memory

Tremaine Emory's connection to Harlem, Georgia gives the setting a personal history. In the collection notes reported by Hypebeast, he recalls “the red clay, the morning dew, all of it” from summers there. Navy's images offer a visual counterpart to that recollection, while Ocean's older song brings another kind of memory for listeners who know *Endless*.

Tears itself launched on September 18. Denim Tears lists the 50 ml fragrance at $180, with its composition built around the idea of cotton fields after rain. That explains the product brief without making the song an illustration of a perfume note.

The strongest image in this pairing may be the simplest: a basketball hoop in a patch of grass, with room around it. Ocean's recording gives the viewer something familiar to carry into that unfamiliar yard. For the length of the film, revisiting “Wither” means looking somewhere new.
