FRANK OCEAN WEARS PRADA'S BRUSHED LEATHER AMERICA'S CUP

Frank Ocean was seen in Prada's reissued America's Cup sneakers in brushed brown leather, a shoe Prada conceived in 1997 for the Luna Rossa sailing team. The reissue comes in two colorways with breathable fabric and the red Linea Rossa strip, and Ocean has worn Prada since the 2019 Met Gala.

Key Points
- Prada built the America's Cup for the Luna Rossa sailing crew in 1997
- Reissued in two colorways with brushed brown leather and a red Linea Rossa strip
- Ocean wore Prada at the 2019 Met Gala and fronted its Spring/Summer 2020 campaign
Frank Ocean has been seen in Prada's new brushed leather America's Cup sneakers, a shoe first designed for the Luna Rossa sailing crew in the 1990s and recently reissued in two colorways. The pair he wore is brushed brown leather with breathable fabric panels and the red Linea Rossa strip on the tongue, three details that set this release apart from the patent versions Prada has sold before.
Brushed Brown Leather, Red Strip on the Tongue
The new America's Cup swaps a shiny finish for a sanded one. Brushing abrades the leather surface to raise a short nap, so the brown reads as matte and slightly soft where earlier pairs reflected light. Breathable fabric sits beside it, which keeps the shoe tied to its sailing job: a deck shoe needs panels that let air through and an upper that does not trap heat.
The red Linea Rossa strip is the identifier to look for. Prada puts its Linea Rossa logo on the tongue of the America's Cup, it reads clearly in a photograph, and Frank Ocean's pair carries it, so there is no question about which shoe this is.
Two colorways are out. Hypebeast listed the October release under the names Teak/Blue and Cacao/Bordeaux, one built on warm brown with cooler blue accents and the other on deep chocolate with wine red, with a release date of October 13. Hypebeast describes the upper as patent leather overlays over technical mesh, while the account that spotted Ocean calls the leather brushed, so the finish wording differs between sources. Both sources agree on the brown palette, the fabric panels and the Linea Rossa strip.
1997 for a Sailing Crew, 1999 for the Campaign
Prada says the America's Cup sneaker was first conceived in 1997 for the Luna Rossa team, the sailing syndicate the house backs in the America's Cup. Prada also dates the shoe's official debut to its Spring/Summer 1999 campaign, so the design was a crew shoe first and a campaign product second.
That gap is the reason the shoe keeps coming back. A sneaker designed for wet decks has to be light, grippy and ventilated before it is anything else, so every reissue starts from a working brief. The 2026 Fall Winter listings on Prada's own site carry that lineage, with calfskin and bike fabric uppers on a 35 millimeter sole and a removable tag showing the season the original model debuted.
The shoe has been reworked on a steady schedule. A Spring 2025 relaunch used a delave suede treatment in Ecru and Cinnamon, according to Rain Magazine, and Prada built a co branded Adidas version for Luna Rossa in 2020. The brushed brown leather joins delave suede, patent and mesh, and an Adidas collaboration on the list of finishes this silhouette has worn. An earlier look at the model, Prada's America's Cup at 29, covers its 1997 origin and its run since.
Ocean's Prada Record Runs Back to 2019
Frank Ocean wore a black nylon Prada anorak to the 2019 Met Gala, a plain look in a night built on costume, and it drew security guard jokes on Twitter. In January 2020 Prada named him a face of its Spring/Summer 2020 menswear campaign, photographed by David Sims. Hunger reported that each star had the letters of Prada turned into a personal acronym, and Ocean's read "Programming Rhythms And Dancing Again."
The third step was his own label. Homer, the luxury company he founded, released a limited collection with Prada that reworked three pieces: the anorak, a backpack and a belt bag, each in four colours, made in Italy by Prada with an internal co branded tag. Ocean shared images of the collection and wrote "PRADA 1 OF ?", a question mark that left room for more.
Footwear is the missing category. The Homer collection had no shoe, and the campaign centered on Ocean himself. A pair of America's Cup sneakers on his feet adds shoes to a relationship that has already covered outerwear, bags and advertising.
Wither Already Soundtracked a Fashion Film This Fall
Ocean's music was already inside a fashion campaign this autumn. His song Wither played over the Denim Tears film for Tears, the label's first fragrance with Comme des Garcons Parfums, in a Denim Tears campaign scored with Frank Ocean that put P3ezy in a Georgia cotton field. That film and these sneakers are separate stories, but they point the same way: Ocean rarely announces anything, and his fashion appearances tend to arrive as a song under someone else's image or a pair of shoes on his own feet.
The 1990s Prada archive is also back in circulation elsewhere in the group. Miu Miu revived its Bubble sneaker in August on the strength of Miuccia Prada's late 1990s archive, as covered in Miu Miu's Bubble sneaker contradiction, so two late 1990s Prada Group shoes are back on sale this autumn.
Nothing in the available material says Prada and Ocean have a new project underway. What the evidence supports is narrower: a shoe designed in 1997 for a sailing crew, reissued this month in brushed brown leather, on the feet of a man whose last announced Prada collection ended in a question mark.
