RAPHINHA SCORES TWO HAT TRICKS IN FOUR DAYS FOR BARCELONA

Camp Nou was already wet on September 16 when Raphinha stepped up for his second penalty of the half. Barcelona led Racing Santander 4 1, comfortably enough that a lesser finisher could have coasted through it. He buried it anyway, and four days later he did it again from open play against Sevilla. Two hat tricks, two different problems to solve, one captain who keeps solving them.

Sevilla's manager called the result a joke afterward, and the box score backs the frustration. Barcelona trailed for three minutes total across ninety, then scored three times without reply across the rest of the match. Luck does not explain a captain who treats a three minute deficit as an inconvenience.

Fifteen Goal Involvements Is a Barcelona Record This Century.

Raphinha has been involved in 15 goals, 12 scored and three assisted, across Barcelona's first seven La Liga matches of the season. It extends a run that started with five goals in the first three matchdays, and no Barcelona player has managed the current total to open a league season since Karim Benzema did it for Real Madrid in 2021 22, nor has any Barcelona player done it at all in the 21st century.

Hansi Flick called him "the best captain we could have" after the Sevilla win, saying Raphinha "connects with the fans, with the team" and "gives his all." A coach does not talk like that about a favorite he is protecting. He talks like that about the reason the armband sits where it does.

Racing Santander and Sevilla Bring Different Problems.

A rout and a comeback ask different things of a striker. Racing Santander needed someone to keep finishing after the game was already decided, the kind of shift where a lesser scorer coasts. Sevilla needed someone to answer a deficit inside three minutes before panic set in.

Flick has used Raphinha out of position all season, in the middle rather than out wide where he made his name at Leeds. A winger asked to play as a central striker usually loses goals in the move, not gains six across two matches. A position change like that is supposed to carry the risk, not the record.

Raphinha passed both tests in the same week. Barcelona's front office noticed before the second final whistle. Sporting director Deco told the club's General Assembly on September 19, the day Barcelona played Sevilla, that a new contract through 2030 was in its final administrative steps, extending a deal that currently runs to 2028. It is the finish line the club already gave Hamza Abdelkarim four days earlier, a front office that keeps reaching for 2030 when it wants a player to stop thinking about leaving.

Two additional years on a contract that was not close to expiring reads less like caution and more like preemption, a front office locking in a captain before a bigger club tests the price. Barcelona did not need to negotiate leverage here. Raphinha supplied it himself, twice, four days apart, in a position the club moved him into as an experiment.

Every number here comes from those same seven matches, per La Liga's own statistics: seven wins, 15 goal involvements, two hat tricks four days apart and a contract extension that went from talks to final steps inside that stretch. A player usually forces a renegotiation by getting hurt in a contract year, or by leaking interest from a bigger club to his agent's phone. Raphinha did it by playing out of position and scoring anyway, which is harder to argue against in a locker room than either tactic, and cheaper for Barcelona than either one would have been by next summer.
