RAPHINHA'S FIVE GOALS ARE ONE MORE THAN MBAPPE'S FOUR

Three Games. Five Goals. One More Than Mbappe.

Raphinha has scored in every one of Barcelona's three La Liga matches this season. Two against Elche on August 23, one against Athletic Club on August 27, two more against Rayo Vallecano on August 31. Five goals through three games, and it puts him one clear of Kylian Mbappe atop La Liga's individual scoring chart.

Barcelona's own account framed the run this week as something bigger, calling Raphinha the top scorer across Europe's five major leagues, La Liga, the Premier League, the Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 combined. That is generous by exactly one goal if you are only counting the league table in front of you. It is also early enough in September that four of those five competitions had barely finished their first full round when the post went up. Generous or not, the number underneath the claim is real. Five goals, three matches, and Raphinha has already accounted for nearly half of everything Barcelona has scored this season.

Raphinha wears 11 for Barcelona now, but he is playing more like the number Barcelona used to hand its finisher, not its winger. Robert Lewandowski, at 37, has started the season as a rotation option. The goals that used to belong to a target man are landing on a Brazilian who spent last spring learning to cut inside from the right.

This is not a new habit. Last season Raphinha scored a hat trick in a 5 to 2 win over Sevilla that stretched Barcelona's La Liga lead over Real Madrid to four points, a run that ended with the title in Barcelona's hands. He did not fall off after that. He simply picked up where he left off, three games into a new campaign.

This Has Not Happened At Barcelona Since Messi

No Barcelona player had scored in each of the club's opening three La Liga matches of a season since Lionel Messi managed it in 2020, the last full campaign before he left for Paris. That is the specific comparison Raphinha's start invites, not a vague one about legacy, an actual gap of six seasons in which nobody at the club opened a league year on three straight scoring afternoons.

The streak also puts him within reach of a longer club record. Only three players in Barcelona's history have scored in each of the first four league matchdays of a season, and the answer for who did it last is not recent. Ladislao Kubala managed it in the 1953 to 1954 season, when he scored eight goals across those opening four fixtures on his way to a 30 goal campaign that still gets cited whenever a Barcelona forward runs hot in September. Raphinha needs one more goal against Getafe to join that list. He does not need to match Kubala's eight to make the comparison count, he just needs the one.

Bernal Found Yamal, But Raphinha Turned It First

The Rayo Vallecano match is the clearest evidence of what Raphinha is doing beyond the raw tally. Rayo took the lead in the 12th minute through Sergio Camello, and Barcelona needed an answer before the game got away from them at Camp Nou. Raphinha equalized in the 19th minute, the play that actually swung the afternoon, before Marc Bernal set up Lamine Yamal's first league goal of the season two minutes later to complete the turnaround. Two goals in roughly two minutes, and Raphinha's was the one that changed the shape of the match, not the one that got the highlight reel treatment.

The stadium the goal happened in matters here too. Camp Nou now carries Spotify's name on the front of it, a naming rights deal that folded a streaming company into Barcelona's identity the same way Raphinha has folded himself into the attack. Different industries, same pattern, a brand attaching itself to whatever is generating the most noise.

The Sample Size Argument Nobody At Camp Nou Wants To Hear

Three games is three games. Raphinha scored 34 goals across all competitions two seasons ago and followed it with a quieter stretch before this opening run, and early season scoring streaks at Barcelona have cooled off before without becoming anything more than a hot September. Mbappe sitting one goal back is not evidence of anything definitive either, Real Madrid have played their own three matches and Mbappe has scored in more of them than not.

What argues against the skeptics is who set the second goal up. Anthony Gordon needed six minutes off the bench in the season opener to assist two Fermin Lopez goals in the same 5 nil win where Raphinha collected his first brace of the year. That is a squad creating more scoring chances than it did last season, not one player getting lucky in isolation. Raphinha is the headline. The supply line behind him is the actual story.

Barcelona play Getafe next. One more goal ties Raphinha with Kubala's four match streak from more than seventy years ago. Miss it, and this was still the best individual opening to a league season any Barcelona attacker has produced since Messi in 2020. Either way, La Liga's scoring chart already has a new name at the top of it, and it belongs to a winger nobody outside Catalonia expected to lead it in September.
