GORDON NEEDS SIX MINUTES TO SET UP FERMÍN LÓPEZ TWICE

Sixty five minutes into Barcelona's LaLiga opener, Anthony Gordon was still on the bench. Six minutes later he had two assists, and Fermín López, the man on the end of both of them, had his second goal of the afternoon. Elche, newly promoted and hosting the reigning champions on the first weekend of the season, lost five nil at the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero and never threatened a reply.

This is not just a highlight. Barcelona spent big on a winger who barely featured in preseason, and he needed six minutes to explain why the fee made sense.

Two Assists, Five Minutes Apart

Gordon replaced Lamine Yamal in the sixty fifth minute with Barcelona already ahead. Two minutes later he slipped a pass through for captain Raphinha, who finished for his own second goal of the day. Four minutes after that, Gordon squared a ball across the six yard box and Fermín López tapped into an empty net for his second goal too. Two assists in six minutes from a player with zero LaLiga minutes to his name before kickoff. Barcelona finished the rout five nil, with Karim Adeyemi adding a fifth goal in a summer squad that already looks stacked before September starts.

Xavi Espart Got There First

Fermín López's first goal of the afternoon came earlier in the half, set up by Xavi Espart, an eighteen year old winger promoted from Barcelona's academy this summer. Finally Offline reported in July that López's market value had already climbed to roughly one hundred million euros after he signed with Under Armour before his breakout, when he had six goals and nine assists in a single LaLiga season. Since then Barcelona locked him down through 2031, doubling his release clause to roughly five hundred million euros and ending interest from Chelsea, who had sounded out a move the summer before. Sunday added two more names to that file, a teenage academy product and a seventy million euro substitute, both feeding a striker the club already decided it will never sell cheap.

Newcastle Never Saw a Day Like This

Those two assists in six minutes matched Gordon's entire tally from the 2025 2026 Premier League season, where he scored seventeen goals for Newcastle but set up only two all year. He joined Barcelona in June on a deal that started at roughly seventy million euros and can rise past eighty million with add ons, the club's first marquee arrival of the summer. It took half of one match for his assist column to catch up with his goal column from an entire year in England, and he did it against opposition he had never faced in a league he had never played in before kickoff. Barcelona's scouting department will call that confirmation. Gordon's game at Newcastle was built on driving at defenders and finishing chances himself, not creating for others, so two assists this quickly says he adapted his role before he adapted to the language.

Hansi Flick Wanted This Rebuild

Gordon was not the only expensive new name in the squad. Rodri left Manchester City for Barcelona weeks after winning the World Cup Golden Ball, arriving on a deal that can reach seventy six and a half million euros. Flick asked the board for an attacking rebuild after last season, and Gordon, signed to play off the left or through the middle, is the piece meant to unlock Raphinha and Yamal rather than replace either of them. Gordon said at his presentation that he had always wanted to join Barcelona and that he believes he can play centrally as well as wide, a claim Flick has not tested yet in a competitive match. The Left Wing Just Got Crowded

Karim Adeyemi and Raphinha both play the same side of the pitch Gordon does, Adeyemi started ahead of him after a full preseason, and Yamal is not losing his starting spot to one substitute cameo, no matter how good it looked. But Flick now has a rotation problem most coaches would take gladly.
