Union's Nike Dunk Low Loses Its Lining and Folds Its Heel

Union Los Angeles and Nike's Dunk Low SP Natural Selection is built from unstructured suede with the traditional lining removed and a collapsible heel that lets it be worn as a slip on. After the initial raffle the shoe and its apparel are on direct sale at naturalselectiondunk.com, and Chris Gibbs explains the design in a short film.
Key Points
- Unstructured suede with the traditional lining removed, per Nike's launch page
- A collapsible heel lets the Dunk Low be worn as a slip on or mule
- Direct sale at naturalselectiondunk.com after the raffle; Nike lists Nov 6, 3 PM
Union's Nike Dunk Low for Natural Selection is cut from unstructured suede with the lining taken out and a heel that folds flat. Union says every one of those choices answered a single question: would the shoe hold up as an everyday pair. The Nike x Union Dunk Low SP "Natural Selection" and its apparel are now on direct sale at naturalselectiondunk.com after the initial raffle, and Chris Gibbs walks through the design decisions in a short film.
Suede With Nothing Stiff Behind It
The upper is unstructured suede, which means the usual internal reinforcement of a Dunk Low is gone. Nike's launch page calls the construction deconstructed and says the traditional lining has been removed.
Union's own description is that it "revisited some of the details that make up the original silhouette," starting with that suede. In an interview with Sneaker News, Gibbs described stripping out the padding so the pair is unlined and easy to step into by the door. The outline stays the one Nike introduced in 1985; what changes is how much structure sits inside it.
That restraint matches the brief Union set when it named the capsule Natural Selection: "a more considered approach to the Dunk and the everyday uniform," with the effort spent on materials, color and familiar silhouettes. Suede without a lining is a materials decision first and a styling decision second.
The Heel Folds Down and the Dunk Becomes a Mule
The reworked heel collapses, so the Dunk Low can be worn laced as a sneaker or stepped into as a slip on. Union describes it as a collapsible heel, and Sole Retriever's reporting adds a Union logo on the tongue.
Union says each consideration "was made with everyday wear in mind." A heel that gives way is the clearest case: it removes the step of working a firm heel over the back of the foot, which is the part of putting on a Dunk that a slip on skips.
The mechanism is not new to Nike this year. The SOULGOODS Homescape Woven, released July 11, 2026, also uses a collapsible heel, in leather, so it converts into a mule without unlacing. That makes two Nike collaborations with a folding heel inside four months, one in woven leather and one in suede.
Three Pairs and an Unsettled Set of Names
The footwear is three Dunk Lows, each with a collapsible heel. Outlets disagree on what to call them: Sole Retriever lists Off Noir, Bamboo and Palomino, while Sneaker Bar Detroit and Modern Notoriety list Eclipse in black, Fatigue in olive and Hide in brown.
Sneaker Bar Detroit adds that the brown pair has a subtle leopard pattern etched into the suede. That detail is the one place the collection speaks up, and only on a single pair. Nike's launch page titles the Bamboo and University Gold pair, style code IF7380 200, Fatigue, which ties the olive name to the pair Sneaker News showed in official images on October 19, 2026 with yellow stitching.
Union and Nike have not published one agreed list of names, so the three suede uppers are settled and the labels are not.
Raffle First, Then a Dedicated Site
Natural Selection moved from a raffle to direct purchase at naturalselectiondunk.com, a site built for this release alone. When the 8 AM Pacific web release was announced on October 27, Union named unionlosangeles.com as the channel.
Union's last Dunk Low project, the 2022 Passport Pack, began with a raffle: the first pair, Pistachio, went on February 11, 2022 with entry limited to Los Angeles County residents, and Court Purple and Argon followed on April 7, 2022. Local first and wide later was the pattern then, and it holds now, with Union selling direct and Nike's app arriving afterward.
It also lands in a crowded month for the model. Supreme and Martine Rose released a triple black leather Dunk Low with Mike Tyson graphics on October 15, 2026. That pair added a graphic; Union's takes things away.
Union has dated five releases since August 7, 2026, and this is the one that ran from a raffle into a purchase page of its own, sold from a shop that has stood on South La Brea Avenue since 2004. Nike's launch page lists the Bamboo and University Gold pair for November 6 at 3:00 PM, which puts the olive pair in Nike's app a week after Union's window opened.
