MARGIELA'S SHORT FILM CASTS REBECCA HALL AGAINST HER DOUBLE

Rebecca Hall walks into a room lit for a screen test and finds someone already sitting in her chair. The face is hers. The texture is not. That collision is the entire premise of ANONYMITY, the short film Maison Margiela released this week, and the film has no intention of ever becoming a real movie.

Margiela built ANONYMITY as a trailer for a psychological thriller that will never open in a theater. Hall plays an actress preparing for a role who keeps meeting a masked version of herself, and the tension is the whole plot. The house calls it a short film, not a campaign film, not an ad, and Margiela is not blurring that line by accident. The trailer's own copy ends on a question it never answers: which version is her, and how can anyone truly know themselves.

Thibaut Grevet Directs His Second Margiela Trailer

Thibaut Grevet directed ANONYMITY, and this is his second short film for the house after Joy, made for Margiela's spring summer 2026 season. Hall stars opposite her own masked double, styled by Ursina Gysi with hair by Tom Wright and makeup by Lucia Pica, and the score comes from composer Senjan Jansen. Hall has said she felt the influence of Dario Argento, Brian De Palma and David Lynch in the footage, and that the fictional title matched something she already carries. "There's a funny war always going on between one's identity as a figure in the public eye and one's desire to disappear," Hall told WWD. It is not a stretch for an actress who wrote and directed Passing in 2021, a film built entirely around a woman who conceals her identity to live as someone else. Grevet already ran a version of this idea once, in Joy for the spring season, so ANONYMITY continues a device rather than inventing one.

The Masks Never Left the Shanghai Runway

The masks Hall's double wears in ANONYMITY are not props built for a shoot. They are the same Artisanal masks Margiela's Paris atelier made for the FW26 show in Shanghai on April 1, the first time the house staged a runway outside Paris since it opened in 1988. The show took place inside a shipyard framed by shipping containers, the kind of industrial venue the house has favored since it stopped showing in traditional theaters. Creative director Glenn Martens paired every look on that runway with its own mask, obscuring each model's face so attention landed on the Second Skin trench and the rest of the collection instead. The house has used masks since its very first show; ANONYMITY just moved the device from a runway to a screen. Martin Margiela ran this logic in reverse. He founded the house in 1988 and refused interviews or photographs of himself for its first fifteen years, so a mask standing in for a face is not a new idea here. It is the founder's own absence, worn by someone else on camera.

Frank Ocean Ran This Play With Endless

Music already tested what happens when a release exists to satisfy a structure rather than to be consumed on its own. Frank Ocean dropped the visual album Endless to close out his contract with Def Jam, then put out Blonde independently one day later, and the two records were never meant to compete for the same listener. ANONYMITY runs on the identical trick. It borrows the grammar of a movie trailer, complete with a director, a composer and a full cast, while owing nothing to a finished film anyone will ever buy a ticket for. That is early, not gimmicky. A house with Margiela's history of hiding its own founder has more credibility running this move than a studio marketing department ever will, and the format costs little enough that Gucci or Loewe could greenlight one by spring.
