BRAIN DEAD TAPS MDOU MOCTAR FOR ITS ANDERSSON BELL DROP

Brain Dead and Andersson Bell put a guitarist in front of their newest joint collection, and Mdou Moctar, who taught himself the instrument off Van Halen tapes growing up in Arlit, Niger, works the campaign like a stage he already knows how to stand on. The collection lands online and in stores September 25. Franco Zulueta shot the campaign. Mark Popovich filmed the companion video, with Visual Adhesive running art department and set design on both.

His face has never been default merchandising for either label. Putting him back at the center says the partnership still runs on people, not a season calendar.

Moctar Is Not Brain Dead's First Collaborator With a Story

Moctar is not the first person Brain Dead has built an entire drop around this year. In July the Los Angeles label gave away three prototype adidas Five Ten NIAD climbing shoes to whoever finished a 200 foot route under Oakland's Highway 24, the same week it opened a capsule marking Ultraman's 60th anniversary since the character's 1966 debut. In August it reworked the Crocs Echo II into a marbled purple exoskeleton with snail shaped Jibbitz charms, sold first through Brain Dead and a day later through HBX. The Five Ten giveaway ran five separate climbing sessions before the final one gave the shoe away, and attendance climbed from 81 likes on the first post to 1259 on the last. Moctar gets comparable billing now, minus the climbing route. Andersson Bell supplies the leather and the hardware. Brain Dead supplies the person people already search for.

Leather, Denim Print and Tie Dye Cover the Capsule

The Andersson Bell x Brain Dead line already includes a Mary Jane built from pony hair leopard print leather, an ADSB x Brain Dead engraving on the hardware, a Fidlock magnetic buckle closure and a Vibram outsole. A denim print skirt carries a washed indigo pattern with a chain embroidered logo on the back pocket, printed rather than woven into the cloth. A Triangolo vest doubles as a backpack, cut from Japanese tie dye fabric, and a matching western shirt repeats the tie dye in a long sleeve button up with logo embroidery on the chest. The partnership between the two labels dates back to at least 2023, when Andersson Bell and Brain Dead shared a pop up with AWAKE NY inside an ASICS space during Paris Fashion Week, which makes this capsule a continuation of a standing account, not a one season license. Moctar's specific pieces have not been listed individually yet, but the house's existing catalog with Brain Dead sets the register: printed denim standing in for woven denim, tie dye standing in for a house pattern, and western tailoring shapes carrying a Los Angeles label's graphics.

Moctar Built His Technique on Borrowed Tapes, Not Formal Lessons

Moctar grew up in Arlit, a mining town in Niger, without access to formal guitar training, and taught himself technique by watching Eddie Van Halen instructional footage and adapting it to the assouf guitar style of his region. The result reads as desert blues on the surface and as something closer to a rock solo underneath it, which is why critics outside the Tuareg scene picked him up first. He extended his 2026 tour through September with fourteen more American dates, adding to a run that already covered the Midwest and Southeast in May. Fender's Player II line picked up two new finishes this year, Rallye Orange and Cactus Gray, on a guitar built around a premise Moctar's career already runs on, that the instrument carries the story before the player's face does. Fender's updated Player II sells on that same logic, a finish color standing in for tone the way a garment print stands in for its subject.

Brain Dead sold a solo Mdou Moctar shirt referencing his 2021 album Afrique Victime. Andersson Bell gets him next, dressed in pony hair leather and a Vibram sole instead of a chorus pedal, arriving September 25.
