HEDLEY STUDIOS SHRINKS PORSCHE'S 550 SPYDER TO 80 PERCENT

Eighty percent of a 1953 race car, running on 48 volts instead of gasoline. That is the Porsche 550 J, and Hedley Studios spent 2026 building it by hand in the United Kingdom. The company already does this for Bentley and Aston Martin, and Porsche is the newest badge on its workshop wall. Hedley Studios calls the result a scaled recreation of the Porsche 550 Spyder, the lightweight racer that won Porsche its first Carrera class victory in 1954 and later carried James Dean to his death.

Nothing about the 550 J pretends to replace the original. It trades Ernst Fuhrmann's four cam flat four for an electric motor and shrinks the whole car to four fifths scale, asking a collector to accept a handbuilt homage instead of a seventy year old race car that rarely changes hands.

1953. Paris. A Race Car With No Passenger Seat.

Porsche unveiled the 550 Spyder at the Paris Auto Show in 1953, its first car designed from the ground up to race rather than a 356 adapted for the track. Porsche built only 90 of them between 1953 and 1956, each on a tubular frame under an aluminum body, with the engine mounted behind the driver instead of in front of the passenger compartment most road cars used at the time. The four cam flat four that powered it, designed by Ernst Fuhrmann, became known simply as the Fuhrmann engine, a motor so intricate to assemble that Porsche mechanics needed specialist training just to service it. At roughly 1,200 pounds, the 550 Spyder weighed far less than many of its Ferrari and Maserati rivals carried onto the same tracks, and that weight advantage, not raw horsepower, is what let a small German manufacturer beat established racing houses.

Hans Herrmann Won Porsche a Nameplate in Mexico

Hans Herrmann drove one of Porsche's factory 550 prototypes to a class win at the 1954 Carrera Panamericana, the road race across Mexico that claimed the lives of multiple drivers nearly every year it ran. That victory, alongside a class win at the Mille Miglia that year, is why Porsche still puts the word Carrera on cars seven decades later, from the 1955 356 Carrera through today's 911 Carrera. The Porsche 992 Sport Classic still borrows its ducktail spoiler from a 1973 Carrera RS, a name that traces directly back to Herrmann's win. Fifteen months later, actor James Dean traded his Porsche Speedster for a 550 Spyder he nicknamed Little Bastard, entered a race at Salinas scheduled for October 1, 1955, and never arrived. He died behind the wheel on September 30, 1955, nine days after buying the car.

Camshafts Give Way to a 48 Volt Motor

Hedley Studios describes the 550 J as handcrafted at 80 percent of the original Spyder's dimensions, with a fully electric 48 volt powertrain in place of Fuhrmann's four cam engine, a low voltage architecture the company already runs in its Bentley Blower Jnr. Every panel and interior detail is built by hand instead of tooled for volume production, an approach that let Hedley's Aston Martin DB5J reach 1,059 numbered examples. Porsche itself spent 2026 running combustion and electric side by side instead of choosing between them. Its Sportscar Together Day event this month put three combustion cars against two electric ones on one demonstration schedule, the Taycan GTS and Taycan Turbo GT among them. The 550 J answers that split from the opposite direction, an electric motor wearing a body Porsche built around a camshaft.

Bentley Got 85 Percent. Porsche Gets 80.

Formerly known as the Little Car Company, Hedley Studios has added marques one at a time under founder Ben Hedley, starting with the Bugatti Baby II, then the Aston Martin DB5J at 66 percent scale, then the Bentley Blower Jnr at 85 percent scale for roughly 115,000 dollars across 349 examples, then a Ferrari Testa Rossa J. At 80 percent scale, the 550 J sits between the tighter Aston Martin build and the roomier Bentley one. Hedley's team hand assembles every car in England much the way Porsche's own Sonderwunsch department hand finishes customer commissions; a 400 hour Porsche paint job for one client car sets a timeline closer to a Hedley build sheet than a factory production line. Neither a price nor a production number for the 550 J has been published.

What Hedley Studios is selling is a shrunk and rewired version of the car that won Porsche its Carrera name in 1954. Eighty percent scale, 48 volts, from a maker whose last two licensed builds sold through 1,059 and 349 units without a discount. That is the bet the 550 J is making.
