208 grams. That is what a men's size 10 Nike Alphafly 4 weighs, and Nike wants that number on the record before anyone mentions cost. The shoe entered limited release today, September 17, with a wider rollout landing October 29 online and at select retail. It carries a new ZoomX LT foam and an Atomknit upper, built, Nike says, to survive up to 300 miles of racing and training.

Nike is adding foam volume and lab reported performance gains to its flagship racer while charging less for it than the model it replaces, reversing how supershoe pricing usually moves.

39 Millimeters at the Heel, an 8 Millimeter Drop

Nike lists the Alphafly 4's stack at 39 millimeters under the heel and 31 millimeters at the forefoot, an 8 millimeter drop on the men's size 10 that also weighs 208 grams. The midsole runs a new ZoomX LT foam under an Atomknit upper, the successor to the Vaporweave build on the Alphafly 3, which the brand says moves less as the foot rolls forward. Nike's own lab testing found lower impact forces through the stride, smoother rotation through the foot and ankle, and greater resistance to side to side movement compared with the outgoing model, which the brand ties to improved running economy over race distance. The Atomknit process shares roots with the knitting technology Nike has pushed into its training apparel line this year, blurring the line between a racing shoe's upper and a running shirt's fabric. Nike also rates the shoe for up to 300 miles before the foam and plate lose their edge, a number the brand has never printed on a racing flat before. None of those figures come from an independent lab yet. They are Nike's own claims, stated ahead of the wider October 29 release.

Kelvin Kiptum Ran the World Record in a Prototype of This Line

A prototype of the Alphafly 3, the model the 4 replaces, was on Kelvin Kiptum's feet when he ran 2:00:35 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon, breaking Eliud Kipchoge's 2:01:09 world record from Berlin in 2022 by 34 seconds. Sifan Hassan won the London and Chicago Marathons in that shoe, running 2:13:44 in Chicago to move to second on the women's all time list. Marathon racing flats used to mean something simpler than a Flyplate. Nike's Zoom Streak 3, a single piece mesh flat that carried Tiki Gelana to 2012 Olympic gold, got a reissue in July aimed at collectors rather than a start line. The Alphafly descends from a different lineage, the ZoomX foam and carbon fiber Flyplate pairing that turned marathon racing into an arms race starting with the original Vaporfly. Whatever the lab sheet says about the new version, it inherits a shoe that has already produced a world record and a top two all time marathon.

Circle Two Nike Dates, Six Weeks Apart

Nike split the Alphafly 4's rollout into two stages. The limited release opened today, September 17, through Nike's own channels, timed to reach elite and sponsored athletes ahead of the fall marathon majors. The broader release follows October 29, at nike.com and select retail doors, the first window most run specialty stores will carry stock. Nike Runs a Shared Foam Recipe on Trail and Pavement

Nike ACG's Ultrafly Trail pairs ZoomX foam with a full length carbon plate, and it swept five podium finishes across four distances at China's Chongli 168 ultramarathon in July. Nike positions that shoe against Salomon in the trail category. The Alphafly 4 runs a related pairing tuned for pavement instead of vertical gain, with ZoomX LT foam and an Atomknit upper standing in for the Ultrafly's trail specific mesh. Nike now fields comparable architecture on two different surfaces, road and trail, against two different sets of competitors, with the marathon version carrying the heavier institutional weight of an existing world record.

None of Nike's Numbers Are Independently Verified Yet

Every figure in this story, the 208 grams, the 39 and 31 millimeter stack heights, the lower impact forces, the 300 mile lifespan, comes from Nike's own lab and its own testing protocol. No independent lab or outside publication has run the Alphafly 4 through comparable tests yet, and none of Nike's sponsored athletes have raced it publicly at a major marathon. The Alphafly 3 earned its record with Kiptum's feet on a start line in Chicago, not a spec sheet. The 4 carries Nike's claims into its own limited release today, and it will need a start line of its own before any of those numbers mean what the brand says they do.

The Alphafly 3 produced a marathon world record and the second fastest women's marathon in history. The 4 arrives lighter, in new foam, priced at 280 dollars, five dollars under the 3's launch price, and lands in stores six weeks after today's limited release. Kiptum set the world record bar in 2023. Nike is betting new foam and a lower price get the 4 to a start line before rivals get a look at the spec sheet.
