Carhartt built the shape in 1954 as a zip front chore coat in blue denim, and the brand did not start calling it the Detroit Jacket until 1998, forty four years later. Denim Came a Year Before Duck Canvas Did

Carhartt's zip front chore coat launched in 1954 in blue denim, a full year before the 12 ounce cotton duck now associated with the brand entered the line. A brown canvas version followed in 1955 alongside that first duck fabric, meaning the jacket most people picture when they hear Carhartt started life in a completely different material.

That order matters because Carhartt WIP still treats denim as a parallel track rather than a substitute. The Fall Winter 2026 Detroit Jacket runs in 12 ounce Dearborn Canvas, the brand's current heavyweight cotton duck, not the original denim. The silhouette stayed a boxy, zip front chore coat with a corduroy collar and two lower welt pockets, built for layering rather than tailoring.

Twelve ounce duck sits at the lighter end of what most work coats use, closer to a shirt jacket weight than the 16 to 20 ounce canvas found on some contemporary reissues. That choice keeps the Detroit Jacket wearable indoors and out, which is closer to how the original was worn on a factory floor than how the resale market treats it now, as an outer layer over a hoodie. The same duck weight carries into the Fall Winter 2026 Preview Collection's hand finished destroy wash, released five weeks earlier on the OG Chore Coat.

Troy Mills Wove the Original Blanket Lining

The earliest Detroit Jackets were lined in wool blanket fabric from Troy Mills, a New Hampshire mill, paired with a slicker nylon lining in the sleeves so the arms could still move under the bulk. That combination is why the vintage J97 version reads warm but stiff, a jacket built for standing near machinery, not for comfort.

Carhartt WIP has since softened the formula without dropping the reference. Current Detroit Jackets keep a quilted or blanket style lining depending on the season, and the brand now sells two distinct cuts side by side. The Detroit Jacket runs close to the body, while the OG Detroit Jacket keeps the boxier, slightly oversized proportions of the 1950s original.

Splitting the cut in two solved a problem the single 1954 pattern never had to answer: a workwear jacket sized for someone standing over machinery all day does not fit the same as one meant to layer over a hoodie in a city apartment. Both cuts share the corduroy collar and zip front closure, so the difference lives entirely in how much room sits across the chest and shoulders.

The Zipper Jacket Waited 44 Years for Its Name

Carhartt did not call this style the Detroit Jacket for most of its existence. Catalogs listed it as the Zipper Jacket from 1954 until 1998, when the company renamed it after the city where Hamilton Carhartt built the original workwear line in 1889.

The name change lands in a run of Carhartt WIP releases built on the same instinct, pulling a specific archival detail forward rather than inventing a new shape. It is the third release since late July to work this way, following the Preview Collection and the Oakland Shirt Jacket and Pant, which grafted its chest pockets from the OG Arctic Jacket parka onto denim in mid August.

Hamilton Brown Anchors a Four Way FW26 Rotation

Fall Winter 2026 sells the Detroit Jacket in four colors: the standing Hamilton Brown and black, joined by new tobacco and dark navy options, through Carhartt WIP stores, carhartt-wip.com, and the brand's app. None of the four are seasonal exclusives; all read as part of the permanent Icons range the brand keeps in rotation rather than a limited capsule.

Carhartt WIP's own path to this jacket runs through Detroit as much as the name does. Founder Edwin Faeh licensed the Work In Progress line from the original Carhartt company in 1994, building a version of the workwear aimed at the same crowds who had already adopted it themselves: skaters, graffiti writers, and the linked techno scenes of Detroit and Berlin, where duck canvas chore coats became a uniform on the dance floor a decade before Carhartt WIP put its own label on one.

Seventy two years since 1954 and the Detroit Jacket has not needed a redesign to stay relevant, only a rotating palette and the occasional fabric swap between denim and canvas. That is the harder trick. A silhouette this simple survives by having nothing left to fix, and Carhartt WIP knows better than to try.
