AARON DONALD PLANS HIS RETURN WITH GARRETT SIDELINED

Aaron Donald plans to return for the Rams against the Giants on September 21, with SportsCenter putting number 99 at the centre of its Monday night promotion. The comeback has a different job waiting for it now: Los Angeles needs Donald while Myles Garrett is on injured reserve.

Donald said he intended to play when reporters asked after Friday's practice. His August return to the Rams had set up the prospect of pairing him with Garrett. By the time Donald reached his proposed first game, that pairing was already on hold.

8:15 Eastern is the kickoff

SportsCenter's September 21 caption tells viewers to watch at 8 p.m. Eastern on ABC and ESPN. ABC's schedule puts Giants at Rams at 8:15 p.m. Eastern, or 5:15 p.m. Pacific. That quarter hour matters if the return clip is what sends somebody looking for the game.

“That's the plan,” Donald said when asked about playing Monday, according to the Rams' September 18 report. It is a statement of intent before the game. It does not settle his workload, snap count or how quickly he can recover the timing that makes an interior pass rush work.

The Rams kept Donald out of their opening game against San Francisco in Australia, and he did not make the trip. He has since worked through full team drills as part of returning to game speed after two seasons away. Practice offers evidence of progress. The Giants' offensive line supplies the next test.

Garrett's absence changes the assignment

Sean McVay said on September 14 that Garrett would have knee surgery and go on injured reserve. The move rules him out for at least four games. Donald's proposed debut therefore arrives with a vacancy in the front that was supposed to make his return especially difficult for opposing protections.

The Rams had acquired Garrett from Cleveland in June. Adding Donald afterward promised a defence that could threaten from multiple places at once. Monday gives Los Angeles a narrower question: how much can its returning interior defender supply while the other headline addition is unavailable?

That is the useful way to watch Donald's first series if he plays. Watch how the Giants assign help inside, then what room that leaves for the remaining rushers. A sack would make the cleanest highlight. For a defence missing Garrett, forcing the protection to account for Donald could matter before he records one.

The return promotion has its number, its opponent and its broadcast slot. The Rams still need the snaps. September 21 can begin answering that question; it cannot yet deliver the Donald and Garrett partnership that made August's comeback announcement so imposing.
