AARON DONALD UNRETIRES TO LINE UP NEXT TO MYLES GARRETT

Adam Schefter's post landed and the entire NFC West had to rewrite its season. Aaron Donald is unretired. The three time Defensive Player of the Year who walked away in March 2024 has agreed to a one year deal to return to the Los Angeles Rams, per Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, and the reason is lining up eleven days from now on the other side of Myles Garrett.

This was never a comeback story about a man who missed football. It was a math problem, and Les Snead solved it back in June.

Myles Garrett Was The Entire Pitch

The Rams traded for Garrett in June, and the conversation about Donald returning started that same week. Garrett is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. Donald won the award three times. Putting them on the same defensive front is the kind of thing a salary cap normally forbids, and it is the only offer that was ever going to pull Donald out of two and a half seasons of retirement. Nobody unretires at 35 to be the best player on a nine win team. You unretire because somebody built a roster that needs exactly one more piece and you are the piece.

The contract says the same thing in numbers. It is one year worth $20 million, with playoff incentives that can push it to $30 million, per Schefter and Rapoport. A third of the money is contingent on January. That is not a retirement tour, it is both sides betting this team is still playing deep into the winter.

The sharper detail is what he walked back from. Donald retired in March 2024 with one year and $30 million still sitting frozen on his old deal, and the Rams held his rights on the reserve retired list the entire time he was gone. He came back for $10 million less in base salary than the year he left on the table, with the difference moved into playoff incentives. Read that twice. A 35 year old legend with all the leverage of a franchise icon took the discount and bet the gap on January. That is not a man doing the team a favor. That is a man who thinks this defense is going to the Super Bowl and wants to be paid like he called it.

That trade also left a mess up front. Bringing Garrett in froze Byron Young's $145 million extension while the front office sorted the money, and the room Donald is walking back into has been under construction ever since.

111 Sacks, Ten Seasons, One Uniform

Donald was the 13th pick in 2014 and spent all ten of his seasons with the Rams. He finished with 111 sacks, second most among primary defensive tackles since sacks became an official stat in 1982. Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2014. First team All Pro eight times. Pro Bowl ten times. He is also the reason there is a Super Bowl LVI banner at SoFi, given what he did to Cincinnati's last possession.

He also has not played a snap since the 2023 season, which is the part every excited take skips past. Sean McVay said Donald went through what he called a very strict, regimented process before any of this was signed, including a workout at Loyola Marymount, and that Donald looked outstanding doing it. McVay coached him for seven years. He knows what the real version of this player looks like, which makes his read worth more than a trainer's clip on Instagram.

The Roster Move Came Before The Report

Los Angeles waived seven year veteran defensive tackle Larrell Murchison on Sunday, hours before any of this was reported. At the time it looked like a strange cut for a team eleven days out from Week 1. It was the roster spot. The Rams were sitting on $16.7 million in cap space against a deal that starts at $20 million, so the math never worked without moving somebody first.

That is the part worth keeping. The front office told you Sunday afternoon what it was going to confirm Sunday night, and it told you in transactions instead of quotes. McVay stood at a podium after the preseason finale and said the situation was up in the air. The waiver wire disagreed with him in public.

Nobody Has Won Anything In August

The counter is real, and it is not about talent. Donald is 35 and has been away from live football for two full seasons. Interior pass rushers age on a curve that does not care about reputations, and the Rams are asking him to hold up for 17 games plus a playoff run, starting with a flight to Australia. A workout at Loyola Marymount is not four quarters against a starting NFL guard. If his body was the reason he left the first time, and he has said it was, that reason has not gotten any younger since.

The Rams open against the 49ers on September 10 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the first regular season NFL game ever played in Australia. Super Bowl LXI is at SoFi Stadium in February, which means a team that just added a three time Defensive Player of the Year to a roster that already had the reigning one is chasing a title game in its own building.

Bet on the front seven, not the fairy tale. Donald will not lead this league in sacks and he does not have to. He has to be the second problem an offensive line solves after Garrett, and that is a job he can still do at 80 percent of what he was. Take the Rams to reach the NFC Championship game.
