VERSTAPPEN CRASHES OUT AT HIS FINAL ZANDVOORT GP

Max Verstappen's final Zandvoort start lasted one corner. The four time champion caught a leftover strip of wet track at the final bend on the opening lap of the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix, hit the outside wall twice, and brought out the red flag before he had completed a single lap of the last Dutch Grand Prix Zandvoort will ever host. Red Bull's own account posted the wreck in its recap anyway, captioned with a laughing emoji and a line that doubled as the whole weekend's epitaph. Nobody, least of all their own driver, saw that coming.

A Wet Line Fifty Centimetres Wide

A pre race shower left one strip of the final corner's banking still wet, sitting roughly fifty centimetres inside the dry racing line every other driver was using. Verstappen dipped a wheel into it once, held the car, then got back on the throttle at the exact moment he judged the corner had dried out. It had not. Without grip on the second pass through the wet patch, the car speared into the outside wall, bounced, and hit it again. He climbed out unhurt. His race did not survive the opening lap, and the red flag that followed reset a grid that never got to run a proper lap in front of his own crowd. Lando Norris went on to win the restarted race for McLaren, with Kimi Antonelli promoted ahead of teammate George Russell for second on a late team order and Russell completing the podium in third.

186 Points and Fourth Place, Still

Red Bull sits fourth in the 2026 constructors championship with 186 points after Zandvoort, seventy nine behind third placed McLaren and two hundred thirty nine behind a runaway Mercedes on 425. That is progress by their own recent standard. Finally Offline tracked Red Bull sitting fourth with 115 points after the British Grand Prix sprint in early July, so the team has added seventy one points in seven weeks without closing the gap on the podium places at all. In the drivers standings, Verstappen is sixth on 112 points, more than a hundred behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli's 242.

Red Bull Filmed It and Posted It Anyway

"Don't think Max was expecting that, GP," the team wrote on the post carrying the crash, tagging it with a laughing emoji before pointing fans to the full cut. "Behind The Charge from Zandvoort is out now on our YouTube channel," the caption continued, naming the team's long running behind the scenes series that usually sells strategy calls and pit wall tension, not a driver hitting a wall twice in the same corner. Most F1 teams bury a bad crash in a short statement. Red Bull turned theirs into content within a day, the same instinct that has made Kimi Antonelli's rise to a 242 point championship lead at eighteen as much a social story as a racing one this season.

Hadjar's Wrist Forced Lawson Back In

Isack Hadjar, Verstappen's Red Bull teammate, went into the Zandvoort weekend nursing a wrist injury from the summer shutdown, and it ruled him out of the race entirely. Liam Lawson stepped into the second Red Bull car as a late replacement, meaning the team that watched its lead driver crash out on lap one also spent the weekend running a stand in alongside him. Two cars, zero finishes for the intended lineup, one video the team chose to release regardless of how the weekend actually went. Lawson had not sat in a Red Bull senior team car at a race weekend since he was dropped after two rounds of the 2025 season and sent back to Racing Bulls, so his first race back in the seat came at the one weekend on the calendar with the least margin for error.

Locked In Through 2030 Anyway

The same week as the crash, Verstappen committed his future to Red Bull through 2030, a contract length that outlasts the current car regulations twice over. It is the kind of grip a driver only signs away when he trusts the walls will not always win. Motorsport has been bleeding into fashion all year for exactly this reason, the same appetite for machines that occasionally lose the fight with pavement.
