A$AP Rocky wore an unreleased Puma on stage during his latest US tour, months before the shoe had a name, a price, or a release date. That is the collision here. A concert becomes a product preview, and a 2005 rally racing shoe nobody remembers becomes the streetwear story of the week.

Rocky did not design a new sneaker from scratch. He found an old one, the 2005 Ouninpohja Explorador II, sitting in Puma's archive, and decided it deserved a second life as the Straycat, his second Puma sneaker project in six weeks.

2005. A Rally Stage Nobody Remembers.

Ouninpohja is a stage of Finland's World Rally Championship, one of the roughest on the calendar, and Puma named a whole line after it in the mid 2000s. The Explorador II carried a wraparound sole and tire style tread built for that terrain, then sat mostly forgotten once trail running moved on to lighter, thinner soles. Rocky pulled it back out during an archive dig, the same move Nike ACG has been running with old Ultrafly molds and Salomon has been running with retired trail models. The difference is Rocky is not a design studio picking a silhouette off a shelf. He is the artist whose face sells the shoe, going into the vault himself.

Rocky Named It Himself: Straycat

The name did not come from a Puma naming committee. Rocky called it Straycat, his own word for an outlier, and the shoe backs that up. It keeps the Explorador's Vibram sole and tire inspired traction but redoes the upper in black and grey with a distressed finish, so it looks already broken in before anyone buys a pair, with red and orange breaking through at the collar. Puma paired the shoe with apparel, racing style gloves and balaclavas, pushing the motorsport reference past the shoebox and into a full look built for a garage, not a trail.

That full look is the part most collabs skip. A gloves and balaclava set only makes sense if the brand actually believes the racing story, since neither item does anything for a sneaker customer who just wants the shoe. Rocky wore pieces from the set on stage before HBX or Puma had confirmed a release date, which is closer to how a musician previews a single than how a footwear brand usually teases a drop.

The Second Puma Sneaker in Six Weeks

Rocky's last Puma release was the Suede 94, which HBX stocked in July at $120, restoring the 1968 silhouette's original proportions with a faux aged sole. That shoe reached back to Puma's most famous archive piece, timed to a Never Not Suede brand campaign built around the same 1968 shoe. Straycat reaches into the part of the archive nobody was asking about, with no matching campaign propping it up, just Rocky's name on it. Two sneakers in six weeks from one collaborator is a pace, not a coincidence, and it is separate from Rocky's other Puma title, creative director of the brand's Formula 1 line since late 2023. The Formula 1 role sells speed as a brand story. Straycat sells speed as a shoe.

Motorsport Keeps Turning Up on Feet This Year

Rocky is not the only one raiding a garage for footwear ideas in 2026. Nike ACG staged a stunt at Montana's FAT Ice Race, racing a modified Ultrafly against a Porsche to sell the same trail meets racetrack pitch Straycat is making with a tire tread sole. Three brands chasing the same reference in one year is not an accident. Racing gear reads as function first, so it gives sneaker brands a way to sell technical credibility that a straight fashion collab cannot fake.

Live August 26, Priced Like a Statement, Not a Hype Shoe

That price sits above the Suede 94's 120 dollars and below most limited archive reissues from bigger houses, which is the right place for a shoe built on a silhouette most customers have never heard of.

This is early, not viral yet. A rediscovered 2005 rally shoe, renamed by the artist who found it, arriving six weeks after his last Puma drop, reads like a pattern forming rather than a one off flex.
