A$AP ROCKY'S PUMA SUEDE '94 LANDS AT HBX FOR $120

HBX is stocking the A$AP Rocky x PUMA Suede '94 this week, and the retailer's own origin story is stranger than the shoe. Kevin Ma started Hypebeast as a sneaker blog in 2005, writing about releases he could not always afford. Twenty one years later, the company he built off that blog is selling the shoe that closes the loop. The Suede '94 in black and white released July 16 at $120.

The shoe is not the story. The retailer is. HBX just proved a media company can still pick the two biggest footwear collaborations of the week, and stock both.

$120 Buys Back 1994

The A$AP Rocky x PUMA Suede '94 retails for $120 under style code 408735 01, and it released globally on July 16, 2026 through Puma's own channels and select retail accounts including HBX. The black and white colorway restores the 1994 Suede's original proportions instead of updating them, a longer toe box, a raw edge tongue, slimmer tooling, and the full retro Puma logo printed on the side panel that later versions of the shoe dropped.

Rocky's real additions are small on purpose, a gold lace lock across the vamp and custom packaging. Everything else, including the yellowed midsole meant to read as aged rather than new, points backward. It is the same silhouette family Tommie Smith wore on the medal stand at the 1968 Olympics, which is history a $120 sneaker rarely gets to carry.

A$AP Rocky Has Done This Before

A$AP Rocky has been Puma's creative director for its Formula 1 partnership since late 2023, a role built around motorsport capsules, not the Suede line. The Suede '94 is a separate project, his first time working directly on Puma's original 1968 silhouette instead of the brand's racing category.

His Instagram caption for the drop ended the way most of his posts do, with DBD, his own shorthand for Don't Be Dumb and one of the more recognizable signoffs in hip hop merchandising right now. FO covered the Suede '94's design return in full when Puma first confirmed the July 16 date. What that piece could not confirm yet was where, outside of Puma's own storefront, the shoe would actually land.

HBX Stocked Two Drops in Four Days

HBX added the A$AP Rocky x Puma Suede '94 to its catalog within a day of the global release, four days after it opened orders for the A Cold Wall x Salomon ACS Pro at $220. Two of the most discussed footwear releases of the month landed on the same storefront inside one week, and neither one is a Puma or Salomon exclusive.

That timing is the actual skill on display. HBX ships to more than 80 markets and runs one physical store, in Hong Kong, but its real inventory is attention, deciding which 3 or 4 releases out of a hundred pitches are worth a homepage slot in any given week.

Puma.Com Did Not Need HBX. Culture Did.

Puma does not need HBX to sell a $120 sneaker, Puma's own site and retail stores can do that without splitting the sale with a third party. Puma needed HBX anyway, because a placement on the platform that grew out of sneaker blogging still moves a release through culture in a way a brand's own storefront cannot fake on its own.

Hypebeast launched HBX in 2012, seven years after Kevin Ma started the site as an unpaid blog, and it now runs as one of Hypebeast's retail divisions under the Hong Kong listed parent company. Japanese entertainment group Avex became a long term strategic shareholder as Hypebeast grew from commentary into commerce, the same arc that turned Complex into a store and Highsnobiety into a marketing agency.

Watch The Retailer, Not The Release

The Suede '94 at $120 was always going to move, that was decided the moment Rocky's name went on the box. The more interesting number is 80, the count of markets HBX now ships to from a company that started as one person writing about shoes he could not afford. A$AP Rocky did not just bring back a 1994 sneaker this week. He picked a storefront that used to be a reader like him, and that is the trade that is actually early.
