Masai Russell ran 12.09 in the women's 100m hurdles at the Weltklasse Zurich Diamond League meet on August 27, 2026, breaking Tobi Amusan's 12.12 world record that had stood since Amusan's 2022 World Championship semifinal in Eugene. The wind read 0.0 meters per second, a legal, dead calm mark with no argument left for anyone chasing an asterisk. The mark also stands as a Diamond League record and a meeting record for Weltklasse Zurich, the season closing final of the Diamond League circuit.

It is Russell's second brush with the record this year. She ran 12.14 in Xiamen in May, the second fastest time in history at the moment she ran it and an American record in its own right. Zurich is the three hundredths of a second she had been closing since spring. Adidas Called the Hurdles Record First. Now Nike Has One Too.

Auburn's Ja'Kobe Tharp ran 12.75 in the men's 110m hurdles at the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Championships prelims on June 10, breaking the world record while wearing Adidas, and FO reported it at the time as the brand's biggest free authority signal of the year, explicitly framed against Nike heading into the 2027 outdoor season. That framing lasted a little over two months.

Russell's 12.09 does the same job for Nike that the men's 110m record did for Adidas, a world record photo that requires zero marketing spend to travel. Track and field is a small enough sport that one brand's authority claim gets answered directly, on the same event family, inside a single outdoor season. Neither company bought this moment. Both are simply the last name on the shoe when it happens.

This Is Nike's Receipt for a Bet It Almost Didn't Make

Nike's Masai Russell bet is no longer a maybe. A brand that signed an unsponsored NCAA record holder in early 2024 now has the reigning Olympic champion and the outright world record in the same athlete, inside the same three year window.

The temperature read is early, not overrated. Russell is 26, the record is fresh, and Adidas has already shown with Tharp that it will spend a marketing cycle answering a rival's hurdles moment with one of its own. Track sponsorship used to be judged in medals and appearance fees. Now it gets judged the way a sneaker drop does, by who owns the record on the day nobody expected it to fall.
