HERON PRESTON OPENS HIS BROOKLYN STUDIO OCTOBER 1

A sewing machine sits under a single work light in a Brooklyn building Heron Preston is rebuilding by hand, and on October 1, for the first time in his career, he is letting strangers walk in and watch it run. Preston announced the studio opening on Instagram this week, framing it less as an event than an invitation. As I rebuild the house, I want to connect with you all in real life, so you can see and feel what I have been working on, directly from me, he wrote. The date and the location are specific: October 1, 2026, in Brooklyn, New York, inside the private studio Preston has never before opened to the public. What visitors will find there is not a showroom. It is the room where Preston's newest line, Orange Label, gets cut, printed and sewn.

Orange Label Was Already the Test Kitchen. Now the Kitchen Has a Door.

Preston has described Orange Label, released under his L.E.D. Studio project, as a test kitchen, a space to work through ideas in limited runs and in house construction rather than full seasonal collections. The line launched in December 2024 as a run of blank T shirts, with a portion of proceeds going to the Sanitation Foundation, the nonprofit partner of New York's Department of Sanitation. The October 1 event sells limited handmade Orange Label screen prints alongside new pieces from a second line called Foundation, and Preston is framing the draw specifically around touch. You will finally be able to feel these fabrics in person, he wrote, a claim that only means something if the fabric was made where he says it was, which is what an open studio proves in a way a lookbook cannot.

Preston regained full control of his own label from New Guards Group in 2025, a shift that freed him earlier this year to step back behind a DJ booth for the first time in seven years, returning to the decks he shared with Virgil Abloh during their Been Trill days before either name meant anything to fashion buyers. A designer working inside someone else's licensing structure does not usually invite the public into the room where the clothes get made, because that room usually belongs to a production partner, not to him. A designer who bought his own name back can open whatever door he wants. Preston, who moved from San Francisco to study at Parsons in 2004 and spent his twenties directing tour merchandise for Kanye West before debuting his own house at Paris Fashion Week in 2017, has spent the years since building a label known as much for its municipal grade orange as for its runway ambitions.

A House Under Construction Is the Whole Pitch

Preston's own phrase for what is happening in Brooklyn, as I rebuild the house, doubles as the literal state of the building and the state of his business since 2025. He is promising more details over the next few days rather than a full program now, a rollout that treats scarcity of information like the RSVP treats scarcity of space. Been Trill scattered its five co founders into Off White, Alyx and Givenchy over the last decade, and Preston's own test kitchen model suggests the next Heron Preston chapter gets built the way those brands were, in small runs, inside a room where the person buying it can watch the machine that made it.
