FUTURA PAINTS TYLER ADAMS TWO PITCHES IN HIS HOMETOWN

Fifty three years ago Leonard Hilton McGurr was climbing into New York subway yards to spray paint that had nowhere legal to live. Today he goes by Futura, and Nike just handed him a public park in Poughkeepsie instead of a train car. This spring Nike repainted two mini soccer pitches at Pulaski Park with Futura's cosmic drips and color fields, and the honoree is USMNT captain Tyler Adams, who grew up twenty minutes away in Wappingers Falls. This is not a sneaker collab. It is a graffiti pioneer given a rec park budget because a Hudson Valley kid made the World Cup roster.

Poughkeepsie's Pulaski Park Is Now a Futura Canvas

Pulaski Park already had two mini pitches, opened in 2022 for neighborhood pickup games. This spring Nike hosted a community event there to rededicate both surfaces, now fully repainted in Futura's signature abstract style, the same non lettering approach he brought to graffiti in the 1970s when most writers were still doing pure typography. The move fits a pattern Nike has run before. The brand's Wild Cards and TOMA soccer programs already commission independent artists to design kits and courts for neighborhood players rather than handing every asset to an in house studio, the same logic behind the Toma LA kits Paisaboys designed for four Los Angeles street crews. Poughkeepsie gets the version built around one specific player's roots instead of a citywide tournament.

A World Cup Captain Grew Up Twenty Minutes From This Park

Tyler Adams grew up in Wappingers Falls, New York, and played through Roy C. Ketcham High School before joining the New York Red Bulls Regional Development School at age twelve. He became the first player to graduate from that program straight into the Red Bulls first team. By his national team run he was the youngest USMNT captain at a World Cup in modern history, twenty three years and two hundred eighty eight days old, the youngest American to captain a World Cup squad since Walter Bahr in 1950. He was named the U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year in 2022. The Hudson Valley already renamed its Martz Field Recreation Facility the Tyler Adams Soccer Pitch in his honor. Pulaski Park is the second local surface now carrying his name into the pavement.

He still lives and works as a graphic designer in Brooklyn, the same borough where this all started. The same spring he painted Pulaski Park, UNDEFEATED and Converse put his name on a $110 Chuck 70 built around the Brooklyn Dodgers. One project sells at retail. The other cannot be bought at any price.

Pulaski Park has no retail SKU, no drop date, and no international rollout, which sets it apart from the usual Nike national team push, the kind that put Virgil Abloh's archive on the USMNT's 2026 prematch kit for a global retail audience. Athletes from the Hudson Valley Hammers, the area's local professional soccer club, showed up as guest coaches for the reopening instead of sitting it out as sponsors on a banner. It has two repainted courts, a graffiti pioneer's signature underfoot, and a professional club sending its own players to run drills for the kids who will actually stand on it.

Two pitches, one Hudson Valley park, zero units for sale. Futura spent five decades getting from illegal subway cars to sanctioned museum walls, and Nike just spent its marketing budget putting that same hand on the ground where a World Cup captain learned to play. A $110 Chuck 70 will sell out and resell on StockX within a week. Pulaski Park will still be there in five years, repainted or not, with Tyler Adams' name already poured into the Hudson Valley before this project ever existed.
