Verstappen's Austin Helmet Puts a Cowboy Hat on the Lion

Max Verstappen will race the United States Grand Prix in Austin on October 25 under a white helmet with a cowboy hat on his lion. The design, unveiled October 15 and described by Oracle Red Bull Racing as "made for the Wild West," is mostly white, carries an American flag on the side and puts denim elements at the front. The helmet is settled ten days out, in a weekend where the drivers' title may not be.

A Lion in a Cowboy Hat

The lion logo that sits on top of Verstappen's helmet stays where it has always been, but it now wears a cowboy hat. The rest of the shell follows a Texas script: a mostly white base, the US flag on the side and denim detailing across the front, according to Racing News 365's description of the design. Photographer Will Cornelius is credited with the images, and the team's post tags Ford, which is Oracle Red Bull Racing's engine partner in 2026.

Verstappen announced the helmet himself on October 15 with a one line greeting, "Howdy," and a link to pre order a scale model at Verstappen.com. Scale models went on sale before the car turns a lap at the Circuit of the Americas, so the reveal doubles as a product launch.

White Suits, White Helmet, Racing Bulls Colors

Red Bull's race suits for the weekend switch from the team's usual dark blue to white, the same as the suits worn by sister team Racing Bulls. The look is built around Texas and the myth of the Far West, with the cowboy as the figure the team is celebrating. Sportscape Magazine reported that the white suits raised hopes of a matching special car design for the US Grand Prix, though no livery had been confirmed when the helmet appeared.

The suits and the helmet are one idea. With a white base on both, the lion in its hat and the flag on the side are the details left to carry the design.

Austin 2022 Was Stars and Stripes, Austin 2026 Is Denim

Verstappen has done this before. His 2022 Austin helmet carried red and blue lines and stars drawn from the American flag and the circuit. In 2024 he said he wanted to keep his design similar across all three US races. This year the flag sits on the side and the Texas references take the front of the helmet: the hat and the denim.

His 2026 season design is a subtle update on 2025, with blue Ford logos on the temples marking Ford as Oracle Red Bull Racing's engine partner. The Austin helmet puts the lion in a hat at the center and leaves the season design behind for one weekend.

Antonelli Needs a 126 Point Lead to Leave Austin as Champion

The standings explain why a helmet is the headline: the championship has a leader, a margin and a clinch scenario, and the only open question for most of the field is second place. Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers' championship on 340 points, 102 clear of Mercedes team mate George Russell on 238, with Lewis Hamilton third on 229 and Verstappen fourth on 221. There are 125 points left after Austin, so Antonelli needs to leave Texas with a lead of at least 126 over his closest rival to clinch the title without relying on a tie break.

Antonelli has already broken Hamilton's overtake record at Monza, where he won on September 6 from 19th on the grid after a Mercedes engine penalty, with 25 passes, and became the first Italian to win that race since 1966. Verstappen's realistic target is second in the standings. He is 17 points behind Russell and eight behind Hamilton, with Charles Leclerc fifth on 215, so the fight for second runs through four drivers inside 23 points of each other. His season also has a hard edge: he crashed out of his final Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort on the opening lap in August, catching a wet strip of curb at the final corner.

The race runs October 23 to 25 at the Circuit of the Americas, a 56 lap Sunday on the 25th. Antonelli needs to be 126 points clear when the 56 laps end, and the hat on Verstappen's helmet will be in the field for every one of them.
