James left the Los Angeles Lakers after eight seasons on June 30, 2026, walking away from a roster already promised to Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. He earned $52.6 million in his final Lakers season and still holds the richest signature shoe deal in Nike history, so this decision was never going to be about the paycheck. It is about who gives him one more real chance at a title.

Philadelphia Already Has the Roster Built

The 76ers are the frontrunner on Paul's own board, and the fit is not theoretical. James would slot in alongside Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown and Joel Embiid, a lineup that only exists because Philadelphia traded for Jaylen Brown by sending Paul George to Boston days before free agency opened.

Embiid has played 65 or more games once in the last five seasons. Maxey is a legitimate second option who does not need the ball to score. Brown gives Philadelphia a two way wing who has already won a Finals MVP. James does not need to be the best player on this roster. He needs to be the fourth option who closes games, and the 76ers are the only team on the board that can promise him that role on day one.

Miami Just Spent Its Superstar Slot
