Slawn Built a Career on Handing Art to Strangers at Parties

Olaolu Akeredolu Ale, who works as Slawn, started painting during the early COVID lockdowns and would hand finished canvases to people at parties instead of selling them, a distribution method that built a following faster than any gallery could have. He grew up working at Wafflesncream, Nigeria's first skate shop, before co-founding the apparel label Motherlan, which caught Virgil Abloh's attention early. A Jewellers works in diamond chains and customized Richard Mille cases, a third material vocabulary in a row that Slawn did not grow up trained in, which is exactly the point of commissioning an outside collaborator instead of doing it himself.

A Jewellers was founded by Abtin Abbasi, who sold his first piece at 19 before building a client roster that already spans sport and music, including Eden Hazard, Paul Pogba, AJ Tracey, Krept and Konan, WizKid and Burna Boy. Custom Rolex and Richard Mille work sits alongside bespoke diamond chains as the shop's specialty, which makes it a natural landing spot for an artist who was already customizing Rolex pieces on his own before this commission.

Carti brings his own momentum into the pairing. Sprite put his Magnolia lyrics on cans this summer, proof his name already travels well outside music alone, the same logic that makes a one of one Slawn piece worth commissioning instead of buying off a shelf.

Neither Carti nor Slawn needs a press cycle to move a jewelry piece, they need the piece itself to surface once, on the right neck, and the rest of the internet does the rest. A Jewellers gets the credit line either way, the same trade every custom jeweler makes when a client is famous enough to skip the announcement.

Call this one early and confirmed rather than rumored, since the source is the jeweler's own account, but temperature wise it sits at about to explode. Slawn has now run the same playbook three times in under two years, fine art walking into jewelry through a different specialist each time, and it has not missed yet.
