LEICA'S LUX GRIP ARRIVES IN SILVER WITH A NEW APP LOOK

Leica's LUX Grip now comes in silver, joining the black version that has shipped since February 2025. The hardware is identical in both colors, a two stage mechanical shutter release, a control wheel and two customizable function buttons that attach to an iPhone over MagSafe and talk to it over Bluetooth. The only thing that changed is the finish, and the finish costs 66 dollars more, 395 dollars against black's 329.

Leica is not really selling a grip. It is selling a year of a subscription with an expensive activation key attached to it, and the silver finish is the least interesting part of what shipped alongside it today.

Two Stage Shutter, One Control Wheel, Two Buttons

The LUX Grip's controls read like a compact camera, not a phone accessory. A two stage shutter release lets a photographer half press to focus and fully press to fire, the same gesture a physical camera has used for decades, while a control wheel and two programmable function buttons handle exposure and app shortcuts without ever touching the iPhone's screen. Leica calls this making mobile photography more considered and precise, and the pitch only works because you can operate the whole thing with the phone still in a pocket. Battery life runs to roughly 1,000 shots before a USB C recharge, and compatibility reaches back to the iPhone 12. The habit this changes is small but real: a phone camera you operate by touching glass becomes a phone camera you operate by feel, which is the entire argument for a 395 dollar accessory that adds no new lens and no new sensor.

Silver Costs 66 Dollars More For The Same Hardware

The silver LUX Grip sells for 395 dollars in the US and 300 euros in Europe, both figures 66 dollars or 60 euros above the original black grip's launch price. Neither version changes the electronics inside; Leica charged 10,400 dollars for a Metal Gray paint job on the M11-P earlier this year with the identical logic: nothing inside changes, only the finish does. The grip's price also buys something the color does not: one year of Leica LUX PRO, the app tier that normally runs 6.99 dollars a month or 69.99 dollars a year.

Steve McCurry Built the Software Half of This Launch

The silver grip is not the only thing Leica shipped today. Steve McCurry, a Magnum photographer for 40 years and the first person inducted into the Leica Hall of Fame in 2011, built a new Artist Look for the LUX app that ships alongside it, a color processing style based on his own approach to light and composition rather than a single filter effect. The rest of LUX 2.0, a redesigned gallery interface borrowed from the Leica Fotos app and new icons styled after classic Leica cameras, arrives on the App Store in early October, which means the silver grip's real companion feature is still a few weeks from being finished.

The Grip Comes With a Year of the Subscription It Requires

A LUX Grip without LUX PRO can still fire the shutter, but the control wheel's exposure functions and the McCurry Look both live behind the subscription the hardware bundles in for one year. After that year, the choice is 69.99 dollars annually or the 499 euro LUX Kit's lifetime unlock, a separate bundle Leica sells specifically so grip owners never have to renew. Buying the hardware and the software as two separate decisions, at two separate price points, is the actual product here. The lock in score is high. A grip owner who stops paying keeps a metal shutter button that still fires the stock camera app, but loses the control wheel's exposure adjustment and the McCurry Look the day the subscription lapses, which makes the 395 dollar purchase function more like a security deposit on a year of software than a one time hardware sale.

Buy the silver grip if you already pay for LUX PRO and want the hardware shutter release; the subscription you are already funding just got a better trigger. Skip it if you have not tried the free tier first, because 395 dollars and a recurring fee is an expensive way to find out you do not like shooting through someone else's color science.
