KACEY MUSGRAVES GIVES SELENA HER FLOWERS

## A tribute in the right city Almost 24 years to the day after Selena Quintanilla-Pérez gave her final performance at the 1995 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Kacey Musgraves offered a tribute at Houston's NRG Stadium by performing Como La Flor. "I love the queen Selena just as much as you do," Musgraves told a crowd of over 50,000. "This is our chance to honor her, by singing as loud as we can together." ## Why it landed Before her passing in 1995, Selena had reached mononym status, organically crossing from Tejano into pop and R&B. As a fellow Texan and Grammy winner, Musgraves was a fitting voice to carry the song, and it was not her first time. She has previously performed Selena's Tu Solo Tu with a mariachi group. The gesture resonated where it mattered. Selena's sister and Selena y Los Dinos member Suzette Quintanilla thanked Musgraves on Instagram. "This makes me wanna shed a tear. Takes me back," she wrote. ## A throughline, not a one off Musgraves kept going, covering Tu Solo Tu at Gruene Hall across three nights in support of her album Middle of Nowhere, which features Mexican inspired songs. Tribute, done right, is not nostalgia. It is one artist keeping another's catalog alive for a new room.
