JOY SUNDAY WEARS DIOR'S CRYSTAL BUSTIER GOWN TO THE EMMYS

Joy Sunday walked the Emmys carpet on September 14 in a white Dior gown built from embroidered silk, crystal studded across a loose blouson bodice with a bow gathered low at the hips and a thigh high slit cut into the skirt. A blouson bodice blouses fabric loosely over the torso instead of fitting tight to the ribs, borrowed from the drop waisted flapper shapes of the 1920s where movement mattered more than structure. Anderson pairs that loose top half with a bow gathered low at the hip line, the visual waist marker a true flapper cut relies on since the garment itself refuses to define one at the ribs. Crystal studding runs across the silk rather than concentrating in one panel, catching the Peacock Theater's lighting rig from across the carpet instead of just under a direct flash.

The thigh high slit is the one modern intervention in an otherwise period accurate shape. A 1920s original would have stayed closer to the ankle. Anderson's version keeps the era's proportions while making the dress move and photograph like 2026, not like a museum reproduction.

That kind of embroidery work takes real construction time regardless of era. Crystal studding at this density gets hand set piece by piece onto a base strong enough to carry the weight through a three hour broadcast without sagging by the credits.

Losing to Linda Cardellini Did Not Cost the Outfit Anything

Sunday was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her role in DTF St. Louis, and Linda Cardellini won the category. A losing nominee's carpet look usually gets a fraction of the coverage a winner's does, filed under also ran rather than remembered. Sunday's dress broke that pattern by being specific enough to outlast the result attached to it.

She is better known outside the awards circuit for playing Bianca Barclay on Netflix's Wednesday and for Dear White People before that, roles that put her in front of a younger, more social first audience than most Emmy nominees pull. Anderson took over Dior Men in April 2025, then was confirmed across womenswear and haute couture the following month, succeeding Maria Grazia Chiuri after her final Cruise show. His Dior womenswear debut came October 1, 2025 at Paris Fashion Week, roughly eleven months before Sunday's Emmys gown, following an eleven year run at Loewe he stepped away from that March.

A single designer signing off on a red carpet custom piece, a couture ready to wear collection and a menswear line simultaneously is a structural bet, not just a hiring decision. Dior is trusting one point of view to hold across every price tier and every occasion the house dresses people for.
