Bandai's newest virtual pet is a ring, and those numbers are not marketing rounding, they are the actual limit of how small a working egg shaped screen can get without the hardware stopping being a toy.

Bandai built the Tamagotchi ring to mark the line's 30th anniversary, and the constraint that mattered most was not the screen, it was getting the whole device to fit a finger without the batteries or the buttons making that impossible.

Sixty Four Components Is Half Of Last Year's Count

Bandai's engineers spent two years simplifying the internal build of the Tamagotchi ring down to 64 components, compared to the 116 used in last year's Tamagotchi Paradise. That number is the real headline, not the ring shape. Every part removed from a wearable is a part that cannot fail, leak, or add weight to a finger, and cutting the component count nearly in half while keeping a full color display working is the harder engineering problem than shrinking a case.

The case itself is egg shaped, in keeping with the original 1996 device's silhouette, and comes in three metallic finishes, gold, silver, and a pearlescent pink. At 28 millimeters it is close to half the length of the original 1996 Tamagotchi, which means Bandai is not simplifying the character on the screen so much as compressing three decades of casing engineering into something that has to survive being worn, not carried.

The Anniversary Runs On Archive, Not A New Pet

The Tamagotchi ring brings back 30 characters spanning the line's full 30 year run, plus one secret bonus egg unlocked separately, turning the device into a compressed timeline of the franchise rather than a new standalone pet. Bandai is selling it exclusively in Japan for 7,700 yen, with an estimated ship date of April 2027, a long runway for a device this small that suggests the two year development period bought precision, not speed.

The original Tamagotchi launched in November 1996 and turned a single digital pet needing constant feeding into a global craze. Bringing 30 characters back onto a ring, rather than launching one new pet, treats the anniversary as an archive to wear rather than a new product to sell, closer to a museum piece you can feed than a toy aisle refresh.

Bandai is not the only toy company mining its own 1990s hardware into a 2026 object. One company shrank a keychain to 28 millimeters, the other rebuilt a console at nearly true size, and both bet that a customer who owned the original in the 1990s will pay to hold a version of it again in 2026.

That instinct is not new to design. Daniel Arsham has spent years turning eroded versions of consumer electronics into a genuine art market, proving nostalgia objects hold value as design statements, not just merchandise. Bandai and LEGO are running the same instinct through mass production instead of a gallery, at 7,700 yen and 179.99 dollars instead of collector pricing, but the underlying bet, that a specific childhood object rebuilt with real engineering constraints beats a generic throwback, is identical.

Gold, Silver And Pink Are Not The Real Engineering Story

Sixty four components and a 28 millimeter case are not small numbers because Bandai wanted a cute headline. They are small because getting a working full color screen onto a ring without the device breaking took two years of simplification, cutting the previous device's part count nearly in half rather than just shrinking the case around the same guts.

That is the part of the anniversary story worth remembering after the gold, silver, and pearlescent pink finishes stop being the first thing anyone notices. A toy company proved a working screen could survive on a finger. The character on it, in this case thirty of them, was the easier problem to solve.
