LEGO PLAYSTATION REBUILDS THE 1994 CONSOLE AT FULL SCALE

Ape Escape and Gran Turismo do not usually turn up in the same sentence as a toy company's press release. LEGO put them there anyway. Inside the shell of its new PlayStation set, both games get their own hidden diorama, the kind of detail a company only builds when it already knows exactly who is buying.

Sony and LEGO revealed the LEGO PlayStation on September 3, 2026, during a PlayStation State of Play event. The set is 1,911 pieces, built to nearly the same scale as the console that launched in Japan in 1994, and it is the third console LEGO has rebuilt since 2020. This time the license came from Sony instead of Nintendo or Atari. That combination, hobbyist scale plus first party approval, is why this drop matters more than another box of bricks on a shelf.

1,911 Pieces And A Power Button That Actually Clicks

The finished build measures roughly 10.5 inches wide, close enough to the real 1994 hardware that it reads as a replica rather than a model. The power and open buttons are functional, and a separate controller snaps together and plugs into the console the same way the original did.

Pricing lands at 179.99 dollars in the United States, 159.99 euros, and 139.99 pounds. PlayStation sells it first, through direct.playstation.com starting October 1, with LEGO Insiders early access the same day. LEGO.com and LEGO retail stores follow on October 4. Every region gets the same set; nobody gets a discount for waiting three days. LEGO is releasing it under the same adult focused Icons banner that carried the NES and the Atari 2600, the line built for a shelf display, not a toy bin. Sony titled its own announcement Building on 30 years of play, treating the release like an anniversary statement rather than a licensing deal.

The Shell Pops Open To Two Hidden Dioramas

Pop the shell open and two miniature scenes come out: one built around Gran Turismo, complete with a scaled track and cars, and one built around Ape Escape, an island scene with a helmet lamp that swaps between blue and red. Both dioramas detach and stand on their own once removed.

Fans have been doing a version of this by hand for years, without a license or a warranty. NickBuildStuff spent months on a five foot Game Boy Color rebuilt for a Guinness World Record attempt in August, working from scratch with no corporate blessing. LEGO's PlayStation gets the same nostalgia with Sony's sign off attached, which is a different product even when the bricks look similar.

LEGO Already Retired Two Other Consoles

This is not LEGO's first console. The Nintendo Entertainment System set shipped in 2020 at 2,646 pieces, complete with a Super Mario Bros cartridge and a CRT television, and LEGO discontinued it at the end of 2024. The Atari 2600 followed at 2,532 pieces, with its own hidden dioramas built into three game cartridges, and it was retired the same month. When GameSpot checked stock in early 2026, the retired Atari 2600 was sold out everywhere except one retailer, and it did not stay in stock there either.

LEGO is not slowing that cycle down. A separate 421 piece Game Boy set launches the same day as the PlayStation, October 1, at 60 dollars. Four consoles, four different licenses, four sets that all eventually stop being made. That is not an accident. It is a release calendar built to run out.

The scarcity model looks familiar outside of gaming too. Denim Tears capped its Topps Chrome parallel at just 100 numbered cards this year, betting collectors would pay more for a number that small. LEGO is running the same bet with plastic bricks instead of cardboard, and a discontinued shelf date instead of a serial number.

This Cycle Is Just Getting Started

Call this early, not overrated. Four retro consoles in six years is still a small lineup, and LEGO has not said whether a PlayStation 2 or a Sega Genesis is next. But the NES sold out, the Atari sold out, and both now trade above retail once discontinued. The PlayStation and the Game Boy will very likely follow the same arc: full price in October, gone from shelves within two years, marked up after that on resale marketplaces where the earlier consoles already trade.

LEGO is not selling a toy here. It is selling a console that people already owned once, at an age when they could not afford the version that plugged into an outlet instead of a shelf.
