KATZ AND SALLE SHARE A ROOM FOR WITTY BANTER

Alex Katz Road 25 and David Salle's New Pastoral with Red Tights appear in Clever, Quick, Magnetic: The Art of Witty Banter at Oklahoma Contemporary. Salle curates the group exhibition, which remains on view through January 11, 2027, and places visually different paintings within one conversation about how pictures hold attention.

Gladstone Gallery's September 25 post names those two works and credits Blake Studdard for the installation photographs. The wide views leave substantial white wall around the paintings, allowing differences in scale, colour and subject to remain visible across the separate paintings and the intervals between them.

The recent Grotjahn and Burden presentation offered another encounter between distinct practices in a shared gallery setting. Salle's exhibition makes that act of looking across differences its stated subject, with Katz's Road 25 and Salle's own painting among the named works.

Salle Curates a Group That Includes His Own Work

David Salle is the curator of Clever, Quick, Magnetic and also contributes New Pastoral with Red Tights. Gladstone identifies Alex Katz's Road 25 alongside it, giving the installation post two specific works to locate within the larger show.

Those roles make the exhibition more particular than a neutral list of artists. Salle is selecting relationships between paintings while one of his own works enters the same field of comparison. The caption does not claim that every picture shares a single style or subject.

Studdard's wide photographs preserve a sense of that movement through the room. A work at one side of the image can remain visible while another becomes the focus, giving the viewer a partial comparison before turning to a closer view. White walls and a clear floor keep the installation's routes easy to understand.

The Pantone and Etai pairing brought two practices together under a shared exhibition title. Salle's 30 artist selection expands the number of possible comparisons, while the named Katz and Salle works give Gladstone's post a manageable point of entry.

January 11 Ends the Announced Run

Clever, Quick, Magnetic runs from September 3, 2026, through January 11, 2027. Oklahoma Contemporary states that admission is free and that tickets are not required.

The show title suggests conversation, but the photographs leave the paintings enough separation to preserve their individual surfaces.
