ADIDAS BUILT LAGOS ISLAND ITS OWN SUPERSTAR

Today, July 23, adidas Skateboarding is putting a Lagos skate collective's initials on one of sneaker history's most recognizable shapes.

The WAF Superstar ADV releases in limited quantities, its leather upper and breathable mesh built as a direct tribute to Lagos Island. This is not a seasonal colorway. It is a shoe naming a West African community as the source, not the backdrop.

ADV is adidas Skateboarding's own suffix, the label it stamps on archive shapes it rebuilds for actual skating, reinforced toe box, double stitching in the wear points, a molded sockliner underneath. The Gazelle got this treatment first. Now the Superstar gets it too, and this time the reinforcement carries a Lagos address.

A Skate Collective From Lekki Gets Its Initials On The Shoe

WAF is short for Wafflesncream, the Lagos skate collective tagged directly in the release as @wflsncrm, alongside @adidasnigeria.

Wafflesncream started in Lekki as a small skate community built around people the mainstream fashion industry usually ignores. Vogue, Dazed and Hypebeast have all covered it since. Now its name sits on a Superstar.

adidas Skateboarding has run this play before. It let Tyshawn Jones turn his Bronx upbringing into his first signature clothing capsule, his birth year stitched into the jacket. The same week this Lagos release lands, adidas is also flooding Sneakersnstuff with six new silhouettes, proof the brand treats global drops and hyper local ones as the same machine, just aimed at different rooms.

The Shell Toe Started As Basketball Armor In 1969

adidas released the Superstar in 1969 as a low top basketball shoe, the first to pair a full leather upper with a rubber shell toe box built for protection on hardwood. Kareem Abdul Jabbar wore them. So did the 1969 Boston Celtics championship roster.

Then hip hop took the court shoe off the court. Run DMC wore their shell toes laceless, tongues pushed out, and in 1986 turned that habit into My Adidas, a song that moved the shoe from athletic gear to cultural shorthand years before streetwear had a name for what was happening. adidas was still selling roughly 15 million pairs of the Superstar a year as recently as 2015, decades after basketball stopped being the reason anyone bought one.

Skaters were part of that second life too. The flat sole and wide shell toe made the Superstar a genuine skate shoe by the early 1990s, long before adidas built a dedicated skateboarding division to formalize the relationship. The WAF Superstar ADV is landing on top of that lineage, not next to it.

Lagos Island Was A Fishing Village Before It Was A Brand Reference

Lagos Island's story predates the sneaker by five centuries. Awori Yoruba settlers built it as a fishing and trading post along the lagoon in the 15th century. It grew into the commercial and cultural core of a megacity, home to Adire textile dyeing, the Eyo Festival, Lagos Fashion Week and the National Arts Theatre.

adidas has been building toward this for a while, not arriving cold. Its Lekki waterfront store, the brand's first Originals location in Africa, opened with commissioned work from local artists Osa 7, Chinelo Ezewudo, Gbolahan Ayoola and Dennis Osadebe. adidas Originals Studio followed soon after in Lagos, built around local music, fashion and art rather than imported campaign assets. The same instinct that had Nike hand a World Cup kit to Slawn, the Lagos born artist behind Nigeria's Super Eagles design, is now shaping adidas's own Nigerian product calendar.

Call This Early, Not Yet Explosive

Limited quantities and a single silhouette do not make a movement. But two facts point the same direction. adidas opened its first African Originals store in Lekki and followed it with a dedicated creative studio before it ever touched the Superstar line, and the July 23 WAF release is the first time a Lagos collective's initials have landed on the shoe that Run DMC turned into a symbol bigger than basketball.

Read that sequence and the bet is that this is a pilot, not an isolated drop. Expect adidas to keep pairing city specific skate collectives with archive silhouettes rather than inventing new shapes, because the Superstar already carries more than fifty years of credibility that a new model would have to earn from zero. Underrated move, early stage, worth watching before it becomes obvious.
