Wales Bonner Gives Dozie Kanu's Shack a Room at DSM London

Wales Bonner presented Dozie Kanu's Shack, dated 2022, on the first floor of Dover Street Market London during Frieze London 2026. Kanu is a sculptor whose first Knoll collection showed at Salone del Mobile in April 2026.

Key Points
- Frieze London ran 14 to 18 October 2026; the Shack, dated 2022, sat on the first floor of Dover Street Market London.
- Kanu's first Knoll collection showed at Salone del Mobile from 21 to 26 April 2026, under six months earlier.
- Wales Bonner's first Hermès menswear collection is due in January 2027, after Nichanian's 37 years.
Wales Bonner put Dozie Kanu's Shack, 2022, on the first floor of Dover Street Market London for Frieze London, which ran 14 to 18 October 2026. The label's own wording was that it presented the work "at our space on the first floor," which makes this a room Wales Bonner holds inside the Haymarket store, not a loan to a gallery. The argument here is simple: Wales Bonner keeps asking sculptors to do part of the label's thinking, and Kanu is the newest name on a list that started in 2019.
Wales Bonner Is Showing a Sculptor, Again
Wales Bonner has treated art as research since at least January 2019, when Grace Wales Bonner curated A Time for New Dreams at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery. It was the first show at the Sackler curated by a fashion designer, and it was built as a series of shrines made by Black artists she had worked with, among them Eric N. Mack, Kapwani Kiwanga and Paul Mpagi Sepuya.
Wales Bonner files the Frieze presentation under the word Research, which matches the Serpentine logic. A fashion house that hands a room to an artist is saying where its references come from, and it is saying it in front of a crowd that came to town for art. Frieze London drew that crowd across 14 to 18 October, and Dover Street Market held its usual Thursday evening celebration on 15 October, according to Wallpaper.
Dover Street Market has lent its floors to artists during Frieze before. In 2025, Sonia Boyce's installations sat on the ground and third floors of the London store with Hauser & Wirth. The first floor this year went to Wales Bonner and to Kanu.
Houston, 1993. A Concrete Chair on a Car Rim
Dozie Kanu was born in 1993 in the Houston area to Nigerian immigrant parents, studied film directing, and took a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2016. He won the Humblot Design Prize in 2018 and finished the Maumaus Independent Study Program in Lisbon in 2022, the year the Shack is dated.
His first museum solo show, Function, ran at the Studio Museum in Harlem from 15 November 2019 and gathered nine works made over three years, five of them chair sculptures. One, Chair [iii] from 2018, is a lavender concrete seat built on a car rim, a nod to the slab car culture of his hometown. The museum's framing was the tension between form and function, between African and African American craft traditions, and between art and design.
A fashion label works in that tension too. Kanu works in found, recycled and industrial materials, and he calls his three dimensional work objects, not furniture. A garment brand showing his work is a brand admitting that clothes live in rooms, and that rooms have a point of view.
Under Six Months After Milan
Kanu's first commercial collection, for Knoll, was shown at Salone del Mobile from 21 to 26 April 2026 in a pavilion by OFFICE, the studio of Kersten Geers and David Van Severen. It is a set of console, coffee and side tables in bronze or manganese finishes, with steel rods, leather tops and fringe tassels. The leather top draws on an African drum he collected, and the fringe on African ceremonial dress and Texas cowboy culture.
So the Shack arrives in a year when Kanu moved from the museum to a major furniture maker, and Wales Bonner picked the moment to place an older piece, dated 2022, in front of the Frieze crowd. The label has been making this kind of move on its own side. Its Karintha Basketry shoe for adidas, released on 17 April 2026, was handwoven in full grain leather by Brazilian artisans. The Autumn Winter 2026 season brought Panga Panga wood brooches made by Botswanan artisans Beullah Serema and Peter Mabeo. Its SS27 preview, Sun Poem, opened with a Keorapetse Kgositsile poem written for Hugh Masekela.
A sculptor who works in concrete, steel and leather belongs on that list. Each entry points to a maker or a tradition and treats the object as the argument.
Nobody Has Described the Shack Yet
Wales Bonner's announcement gives the title, the year, the floor and a courtesy credit to Dozie Kanu, and nothing about the Shack's materials, size or whether it is for sale. No description of the piece has surfaced in coverage of the week, so this article does not offer one. Five images released with the presentation are the public record of how it looked in the room.
The context around it is easier to document. Dover Street Market London is also where Palace keeps its only London shop for now, since its Brewer Street shop closed, which tells you how much the Haymarket store is asked to carry. During the fair, Stone Island funded a bursary for each of the 35 galleries in Frieze Focus, the fair's section for young galleries. Fashion sponsors the art week and now borrows its artists.
The larger test comes in January 2027, when Wales Bonner shows her first collection as creative director of Hermès menswear. Hermès announced the post in October 2025, when she took over from Véronique Nichanian, who had led the line for 37 years.
