After Shawn Carter had been rejected by major record labels, it began as an independent outlet for his debut album. Carter, Damon Dash, and Kareem Burke started the label through Priority Records, using finances from Payday Records due to their singles-only deal. This is the part that gets underreported. None of the major labels would agree to one of Damon Dash's key demands: that Roc-A-Fella maintain ownership of Jay-Z's master recordings. Owning the masters would turn out to be a brilliant financial decision, as Jay-Z's back catalogue still sells millions of units, even almost 20 years later. The rejection that looked like failure was actually a filter. Every label that said no kept him away from a standard 360 deal that would have cost him more than it gave. Jay-Z rented a small, cheap office for Roc-A-Fella Records on John Street in one of the "dreariest parts of the busiest city in the world." He and his partners thought of their low-rent headquarters as a "starting point" that would eventually lead them to Manhattan. That office is a specific detail worth sitting with. Not a label suite. Not a Midtown conference room. A cheap John Street office, building something the industry had already declined to fund. Here is the timeline that matters. On February 7, 2002, *Reasonable Doubt* was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), for shipments of a million copies in the US. The album dropped in June 1996. The platinum plaque arrived nearly six years later. By then, Jay-Z had already released five more studio albums, three of which debuted at No. 1. The certification was retroactive canonization. It wasn't until six years later in 2002, when Jay-Z had blown up and people went back to his earlier catalog, that *Reasonable Doubt* was finally declared platinum. This is how delayed classics work. The audience doesn't find the record. The record finds the audience, once the artist has built enough credibility to send people backward through his discography. By 2006, *Reasonable Doubt* had sold 1.5 million copies in the United States. By comparison, the best-selling album in Jay-Z's catalog, Vol. 2: Hard Knock Life, sold over 6.2 million copies. The numbers will never match. They don't need to. The cultural weight of *Reasonable Doubt* operates independently of its sales trajectory, which is the whole argument. There is a fair counterargument here. Albums get retroactively elevated all the time for reasons that have more to do with artist mythology than actual sonic quality. No album climbed further. *Reasonable Doubt* was named one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time by The Source in 1998, Vibe, who ranked it seventh on their 2002 list, and MTV.com, who ranked it sixth on their 2005 list. Each of those placements arrived after the fact. Each one built the next. Jay-Z himself has always been clear about the album's place in his own hierarchy.
