Eight cities, one room

Air Works is Nike Sportswear's research, development and design program for Air Max, announced on Air Max Day in March. Eight designers from eight cities were invited to Nike's Philip H. Knight Campus in Beaverton, Oregon, and given four days, May 11 to 14, with Nike's mentors and four decades of Air to build from. The brief was to imagine what Air Max can become as 3D printed footwear, with Zellerfeld printing the results.

Masyn walked in as the Los Angeles name in that first class. "Air Works is about celebrating the cultural impact of Air Max and inviting a core group of global creatives to imagine what its future could look like," said Andy Caine, Nike Sportswear's VP and Creative Director, when the program was announced. Each designer's shoe is revealed in its own city, one at a time, on a calendar that runs into Air Max Day 2027, the 40th anniversary of the Air Max 1.

The printing matters as much as the mentors. Zellerfeld prints each pair from a single continuous strand of TPU, one material from the upper to the sole. Nike debuted its first printed Air Max, the Air Max 1000, with Zellerfeld at ComplexCon in November 2024. Air Works hands that process to eight new points of view.

Stars from the upper to the outsole

The shoe is a mule, 3D printed by Zellerfeld in partnership with Nike. A constellation of stars runs across the upper and down to the outsole, where one large star embossed into the sole leaves a star shaped impression in every footprint.

The stars are not the ones on the billboards of his hometown. For Masyn they are the friends, family and community who have walked with him through every step, the people whose support, guidance and belief leave a lasting imprint on who you become. The footprint is the point. The people closest to him left one on his life, so the shoe leaves one on the ground.

The stars are printed into the shoe rather than stitched onto it. Zellerfeld prints in one material, so the constellation carries from the upper into the outsole on a single printed form.

The mule is a deliberate choice. It blurs the traditional masculine and feminine lines so one silhouette can be worn by all, with the Air unit flashing pink at the heel.

I'd be lost without the stars in my life, and this opportunity is a chance to show them how much they mean to me.

Friday night at Nova Studios

Nike NSW is celebrating Masyn and the launch of his Air Max with the friends and family who inspired it, the community behind his creative journey and the design. The invitation came to us from Nike Sportswear. Friday, October 16, 7:00 to 8:30 PM, Nova Studios on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood. We said yes.

That is the shape of an Air Works reveal. No store date and no price. Each designer's shoe arrives as a small friends and family run, shown in the designer's own city with the people who shaped it in the room. For Los Angeles that room is Nova Studios, and this time we are in it.

One of 100, and one is ours

Nike Sportswear lifted the embargo this morning at 9:05 AM Pacific. Masyn's is the fourth Air Works design shown and the first from Los Angeles, after Motoi Hatsuki's prototype in Tokyo, Tasnim Chowdhury's shoe in London and Marc Su's Air Max Link in Beijing. Four more follow, Shanghai in December, Paris in January, New York in February and Mumbai in March.

100 pairs exist. None are for sale. No Air Works shoe has carried a price or a sale day, and this one is no different. The run is for the friends and family celebration, the people in Masyn's constellation, and one of the 100 is on its way to us, to wear into Friday night.

That is the measure of the moment. For Nike it is Air Max handed to a new generation and printed in their own cities, on the road to the Air Max 1's 40th anniversary. For Los Angeles it is a designer's gratitude turned into an object, 100 times over, and the brand clearing the room for his people first.

From the room
