The Workwear Mayor Gets His Official Uniform

NYC's newest mayor Zohran Mamdani just took office as the city's first Muslim and Asian American leader, and he's already making sartorial statements that speak louder than policy papers.

The piece features custom embroidery by Bushwick-based Arena Embroidery, founded by Rocco Arena in 2018. "The City of New York" features prominently at the chest in bold curly lettering while the bicep reads "Mayor." The inside collar states: "No problem too big. No task too small."

The brand's "Full Swing Steel Jacket" was sourced from Dave's, a family-run workwear store in New York's Chelsea neighborhood that's been in business since 1963. But it's the custom embroidery that transforms basic workwear into mayoral armor.

Arena's Championship Pedigree

Rocco Arena established his embroidery shop in 2018 after Nike Sportswear hired him to establish the West Coast operation of their 'bespoke' Destroyer program, where he designed graphics and techniques to adorn their 'varsity-jacket' silhouette for celebrity and consumer.

This ultimately led to producing the Championship Jackets for the team themselves, which he still considers his greatest and proudest achievement. Drake's 'Scorpion' Tour was a whirlwind of excitement that presented itself through connections, and over the span of almost one year, they produced many unique pieces for Drake to perform in, wear in music videos, and attend events.

Arena is now a team of 5 individuals, running 9 'heads' of embroidery. From Lakers championships to mayoral inaugurations, Arena's thread tells New York stories.

Political Couture Meets Street Credibility

His sartorial choices so far reflect a conscious effort to use fashion as a tool for communicating his politics. But this most recent instance goes for a more direct line, spelling out his alliances via NYC branding.

Mamdani, the democratic socialist who campaigned on a promise to tackle the affordability crisis, vowed to govern "expansively and audaciously." "I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as a democratic socialist. I will not abandon my principles for fear of being deemed radical."

The embroidered jacket isn't just mayoral merch. It's a statement piece that says this administration works with its hands, literally and figuratively. While other politicians wear thousand-dollar suits to construction sites, Mamdani shows up in actual work clothes that happen to be custom.
