MICHAEL CROSSES $1 BILLION, FIRST BIOPIC TO DO IT

That is the new worldwide total for Michael, Antoine Fuqua's Michael Jackson biopic, and it makes the film the first biography movie in Hollywood history to cross ten figures at the box office. Critics called it too reverent to work. The box office just proved a legacy still outsells a takedown.

Michael opened April 24, 2026 in the United States through Lionsgate, two weeks after its Berlin premiere on April 10 and a UK release through Universal Pictures on April 22. Jaafar Jackson, the singer's real nephew, plays the adult Michael Jackson in his acting debut. Colman Domingo and Nia Long play his parents, Joe and Katherine Jackson, alongside Miles Teller and Mike Myers in supporting roles. The rollout ran three markets in two weeks, a release pattern usually reserved for a franchise tentpole, not a music biography that most studios treat as a modest awards play.

$1.001 Billion and a Record No Biopic Had Touched

Michael has grossed $629.8 million overseas and $371.8 million domestically, a combined total that crossed $1 billion this month. No biography film had ever done that before Michael did it.

That total also makes Michael the highest grossing film based on a real person of any kind, overtaking 2023's Oppenheimer and its $975 million run. Michael now sits alongside Christopher Nolan's own summer bet, The Odyssey, as one of the two biggest event releases of the year, except Michael already has its final number and Nolan is still waiting on an opening weekend.

Jaafar Jackson Plays His Uncle in His First Movie Ever

Jaafar Jackson plays the adult Michael Jackson in Michael, his first film role of any kind. He is the real life nephew of the man he portrays, cast over established actors after Fuqua ran an extensive search for someone who would not have to act like a Jackson.

That casting call is the human story behind the number. Colman Domingo plays Joe Jackson and Nia Long plays Katherine Jackson, the parents whose household produced the Jackson 5 and later the solo career the film covers. A biopic lives or dies on whether an audience believes the person on screen is the person they remember, and Lionsgate bet nine figures that bloodline would read as proof rather than gimmick.

Juliano Valdi plays Michael Jackson as a child, also in a film debut, which means the two actors carrying the title role had never appeared in a released movie before this one. That is a bigger risk than any studio takes on a superhero recast, and it is the reason early reviews out of Berlin argued about the performance more than the story.

Eight Years Is How Long Bohemian Rhapsody Held the Record

Bohemian Rhapsody's $911 million stood as the ceiling for musical biopics from 2018 until this month, built on Rami Malek's Oscar winning performance and a Queen catalog that never stopped selling. Michael passed that total and kept climbing.

Elvis, the 2022 Austin Butler film, never got close. It finished its run at $269.7 million worldwide, good enough to sit behind Bohemian Rhapsody as the second highest grossing musician biopic, but a fraction of what Michael has now banked. Michael's opening weekend alone, $97 million domestic and $217 million worldwide, beat the entire domestic run of several musical biopics released this decade.

Oppenheimer Owned the Real Person Record. Not Anymore.

Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan's 2023 film about the atomic bomb, held the record for highest grossing film based on a real person at $975 million worldwide. Michael has now taken that record too, on top of the musical biopic crown Bohemian Rhapsody used to hold.

Lionsgate is not treating this like a one time win. The studio is expected to greenlight at least one more film about Jackson's life, turning Michael into the opening chapter of a franchise built on a music catalog the studio does not even own. That is the same bet Sony made this month when Spotify turned Jay Z's Reasonable Doubt anniversary into a subway takeover. A legacy catalog is worth more as a rolling media property than as a static back catalog sitting on a shelf.

Michael did not need to be a great film by every critic's account, and reviews out of Berlin were mixed at best. It needed Jaafar Jackson's face, a $975 million ceiling to clear, and a studio willing to spend nine figures on the idea that grief sells tickets when the person grieving looks exactly like the man audiences lost in 2009. Bohemian Rhapsody held the biopic record for eight years. Michael broke it, broke Oppenheimer's real person record too, and is still selling tickets four months after opening weekend. Call the musical biopic dead again and the box office will keep proving otherwise, one billion dollar sequel greenlight at a time.
