MOONRAKERS, a Toray spinoff, and mastermind JAPAN announced Airfreak Ultra Light as a coming soon collaboration on October 22, 2026. The fabric weighs roughly 130 to 140 grams per square metre and first sold on Makuake in December 2025.

Key Points

Airfreak Ultra Light is a sweatshirt fabric built by MOONRAKERS, a Toray spinoff, at roughly 130 to 140 grams per square metre, and mastermind JAPAN has announced a collaboration on it that is listed as coming soon. The October 22 announcement gives no release date, no price and no product list, so the fabric is the only part of the collaboration anyone can inspect today.

mastermind JAPAN has been busy with unlikely materials this season. The label put out its 19th collaboration with BAPE on August 15, a capsule of faded denim, knitwear and a serialized watch, and a skull on a deerskin coin purse a month later. A performance sweat fabric from a textile engineer is a third direction.

130 to 140 Grams, Pitched Against Underwear

Airfreak Ultra Light weighs 130 to 140 grams per square metre, a basis weight that MOONRAKERS' own Makuake campaign compares to underwear. The fabric rests on Toray's ultralight technology, is made in Japan from polyester, and is more than 30 percent lighter than the first Airfreak.

The brand's stated goal was the world's lightest sweatshirt. The garment weight in grams is not published, and that claim has not been independently confirmed, so the figure to hold onto is the fabric's basis weight and the 30 percent gain over the original.

The category is the point. Most sweatshirts in the market are sold on the idea of heft, and a fleece back that feels like a blanket. The MOON TECH fabric MOONRAKERS developed with MNMM went the other way too, selling on quick drying, wrinkle resistance, UPF50 plus protection and stretch of nearly 50 percent in every direction, so lightness and function have been the house pitch from the start. Airfreak sells the opposite: insulation by trapped air in a knit that reads closer to a base layer than a hoodie.

1,000 Pieces in a Day, Then March 4

MOONRAKERS first sold Airfreak Ultra Light on Makuake in December 2025, with the crowdfunding launch set for noon Japan time on Friday, December 12. According to the company's later notice, the first 1,000 pieces sold out within a day.

A general release followed at noon on March 4, 2026, in limited quantity. The range has widened since: the line now includes a sweat hoodie, a crew neck and sweatpants, a zip parka and a cardigan, and a seven pocket hands free parka built with RE:LORE.

That history gives the mastermind JAPAN edition a clear shape. Ultra Light has been sold in limited windows against fabric produced in advance, so any collaboration on it will most likely follow the same rule of making a fixed amount and selling through it. Nothing on the schedule has been confirmed.

Toray's Spinoff Keeps Handing the Fabric to Other Names

MOONRAKERS is a spinoff venture from Toray, and its apparel side is run by Toray Diplomode. FashionSnap reported on June 26, 2026 that the label's domestic apparel, cut from what the company calls its highest grade fabric, was selling well.

Collaboration is how it has grown. The first MNMM × MOONRAKERS project, the MOON TECH oversize tee, launched on Makuake in spring 2023, and a long sleeve version became the fourth joint project with MNMM. Admiral has done a tee with the label too.

The mastermind JAPAN edition moves that habit from the sportswear and outdoor end of Japanese retail to a brand built on a skull. Whether that skull appears on the sweat itself has not been shown.

Homma Has Already Done Boots, Watches and Coin Purses

Masaaki Homma founded Mastermind World in 2017 after a career that included time at Yohji Yamamoto, and the mastermind JAPAN line is built around a skull and crossbones motif. Footwear projects with Dr. Martens, Vans Vault and Timberland are on its record.

In 2026 alone the brand has put the skull on an Inden Ya and JIZAING deerskin coin purse for the September 16 reopening of its Tokyo Station shop, and on a BAPEX watch limited to 100 pieces. A fabric from a textile company is the quietest object in that run.

MOONRAKERS has sold Ultra Light in two windows so far, December 2025 and March 4, 2026. A mastermind JAPAN edition would be the third, and the announcement gives no date for it. Neither brand has said which cut the edition will use, whether that is the crew neck, the hoodie or something new, so the fabric and its two earlier sale windows are the only confirmed facts.
