The LV Crayon, the house's first ever lip liner, was not sculpted by a beauty chemist. It was sculpted by Konstantin Grcic, the German industrial designer who spent four years developing a single die cast aluminum chair for Magis. That chair, Chair One, launched in 2004 and still sits in permanent design museum collections two decades later. Now his hand is on something a customer carries in a coat pocket.

The thesis is simple. Louis Vuitton is not selling makeup here. It is selling the same object logic it applies to trunks and watches, shrunk down to something applied to a mouth. Whether that logic survives contact with a $58 price tag in a category full of $24 drugstore liners is the real question.

$58 Buys a Sculpture, Not Just a Lip Liner

The LV Crayon retails for $58, well above the $24 to $32 range that covers most prestige lip liners from Chanel and Dior. That price gets a matte black wooden barrel with an ombre color reveal tip and a gold monogram cap, ten shades running from the beige Beige Atlas to the deep bordeaux Monogram Rouge, and a peptide formula Louis Vuitton says plumps lips and holds hydration for 24 hours while resisting bleed. None of that formula claim is unusual for the category. What is unusual is who shaped the object holding it.

Konstantin Grcic Spent Four Years on a Chair. This Took Less.

Grcic built his reputation on Chair One, the Compasso d'Oro winning Mayday lamp from 2001, and the Myto chair that took the same prize in 2011. He trained as a cabinet maker before he ever touched furniture design, and his client list already includes Audi, Prada and Issey Miyake. Louis Vuitton has handed its name to outside specialists before, including when it built an actual carbon frame race bike with Pinarello instead of licensing a logo onto someone else's frame. For the Crayon, Grcic sculpted the barrel into the silhouette of the Monogram Flower, the four petaled emblem that has anchored the house's canvas since 1896, arguing the shape improves grip and line control during application. That is an engineering claim a chair designer makes about a seat shell, applied instead to a cosmetic held between two fingers for three seconds a day.

The Barrel Is Wood, Not the Usual Molded Plastic

Most prestige lip liners ship in aluminum or plastic barrels because both mold cheaply at scale. Louis Vuitton chose wood, the same material Grcic trained on before he designed a single chair. That choice slows production and raises unit cost, but it also means the Crayon reads as an object first and a cosmetic second, closer to a fountain pen than a shelf item at a beauty counter. Pat McGrath, named creative director of cosmetics for La Beaute Louis Vuitton in 2025, is the one who chose to hand that barrel to a furniture designer instead of a packaging house.

Ten Shades Cost the Same as a Prestige Palette and a Coffee

La Beaute Louis Vuitton launched in late 2025 with lip products priced at $160 and eyeshadow palettes at $250, so the $58 Crayon is the cheapest entry point into the collection by a wide margin. That pricing sits closer to what a shopper already pays for a Dior or Chanel liner than to Louis Vuitton's own $160 lip product, which makes the Crayon the door opener for a customer who wants the monogram without the full basket. The monogram itself turned 130 years old this year and has already been stretched onto gym equipment, so a lip liner is a modest ask by comparison.

Buy It for the Shape. That Is the Whole Pitch.

The verdict is buy, specifically for the shape. $58 is a fair price for a wooden barrel that an award winning industrial designer spent real time on, and the peptide formula holds up against drugstore competitors that cost a third as much. What it is not is a functional necessity. Louis Vuitton did not build the Monogram Flower silhouette for grip alone. It built it for a customer who wants to be seen holding the object before she uses it. That is not a criticism.
