UTMB stands for two things depending on who you ask: Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, or the closest thing trail running has to a coronation. Jazmine Lowther has raced its shorter loops before. On Friday, August 28, she lines up in Chamonix for the full 174 kilometer distance for the first time, and she is calling it a classroom, not a crowning.

That is not humility for the cameras. Lowther has finished no worse than fourth in an ultra since 2022. For her first full UTMB, she says the goal is simpler than a result: finish, have an adventure, take in the course.

Jazmine Lowther Has Stood on Podiums Before

Lowther is from Nelson, British Columbia, and worked as a biologist before moving into ultrarunning full time as an athlete and coach. She won Canyons 100km in 2022, setting a course record on her debut at the distance. She placed fourth at UTMB's own CCC race, the 100 kilometer loop, that same year. She was second at Transgrancanaria's 128K in 2023, won Ultra-Trail Cape Town's 100K in 2024, and finished fourth at the 2025 Trail World Championships Long Trail. In April 2026 she took third at the Madeira Island Ultra Trail. Then in June she won the Triple Crown at Broken Arrow Skyrace, the Palisades Tahoe event Nike ACG has spent three years building into a mountain running festival. None of those races is 174 kilometers long. That gap is exactly what UTMB is built to test.

The Full UTMB Covers 174 Kilometers and 9,900 Meters of Climbing

The Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc's flagship race runs 174 kilometers with more than 9,900 meters of elevation gain, looping through France, Italy and Switzerland before returning to the start line in Chamonix. This year's edition doubles as the UTMB World Series Finals, drawing top qualifiers from every regional race on the calendar into one week, August 24 through 30. The flagship race itself begins at 5:45pm local time on Friday, August 28, and most finishers spend two full days and at least one full night moving through the Alps before they see the finish arch again. Lowther has raced the shorter CCC route at UTMB before, in 2022, finishing fourth over 100 kilometers. This week is the first time she has entered the full distance the race is actually named for, the one that made Chamonix synonymous with ultrarunning in the first place.

Three Goals, None of Them a Finishing Time

The caption Arc'teryx posted ahead of the race lists exactly three goals for its athlete jazmine_lowther, and a split time is not one of them: finish, have an adventure, take in the experience. Photographer lela__labs and filmmaker elflamingofilms have been documenting the buildup, and the work reads less like sponsor content and more like a diary of someone treating a 174 kilometer race as orientation rather than a title defense.

Nobody Should Call This a Coincidence

Arc'teryx ran the 15th edition of its Alpine Academy in Chamonix from July 2 to 5, seven weeks before Lowther's start line, in the same town, on the same mountains, with guide led clinics taught through its longtime CHAMEX partnership. It is the third mountain sports commitment the brand has made in 2026 alone. In April it signed a two year deal to sponsor the Mount Marathon Race in Seward, Alaska, the oldest mountain race in North America, heading into its 100th running. Lowther's UTMB debut is not an isolated athlete story. It is the trail running piece of a roster Arc'teryx has been assembling across climbing, alpine racing and now the biggest stage in ultrarunning.

Do Not Read This as a Dig at The North Face

Lowther spent three years sponsored by The North Face before joining Arc'teryx in January 2025. A switch like hers works the same way a label signing pulls an artist off a rival roster. It is rarely about dissatisfaction and mostly about which company is building the program an athlete wants to be part of next. Arc'teryx's bet is that Lowther's UTMB result matters less to the brand than the footage, the story and the credibility a first attempt at the sport's biggest race buys, regardless of where she finishes.

Lowther has never finished worse than fourth at any ultra she has entered since 2022, and she is treating 174 kilometers of the Alps as an open notebook rather than a target time. Bet on a top fifteen finish in her first attempt at the distance, and a second, faster UTMB entry inside two years.
