FERNANDO MENDOZA GOES FIRST TO RAIDERS IN 2026 NFL DRAFT

Seventy-two million people have been watching this moment build for eleven months. Fernando Mendoza, 22, out of Indiana, gets the card. He is the first overall pick. The building erupts. The Raiders finally have their guy. ## Indiana Went 16-0. Nobody Expected That. Understand the context. Indiana football, before Mendoza, was a program that had not won a Big Ten title since 1967. Mendoza is different in one significant way: he was never asked to play outside his system in college. Indiana's offense was built around him entirely. The challenge for the Raiders' new offensive coordinator is translating those principles to an NFL structure that will look nothing like what he operated in Bloomington. ## The Fashion Subplot Nobody Covered Mendoza arrived at the draft in a double-breasted midnight blue suede blazer with contrasting lapels and a chest logo from a small New York-based label that is not yet in major retail. He has 1.4 million Instagram followers. He has already been approached by four sportswear companies. The endorsement era for his position starts now. Patrick Mahomes signed with Adidas in 2023. Lamar Jackson has his own New Era collab. Mendoza's first commercial contract will come before training camp. ## What the Contract Looks Like Before the Ink Dries The rookie salary scale for the 2026 first overall pick is governed by the current CBA. Four years, fully guaranteed, approximately $47 million total. The fifth-year option kicks in depending on whether he's named to a Pro Bowl or All-Pro team in years one through four. By 2030, if the Raiders exercise the option and Mendoza puts up numbers, that number is in the $250-280 million range. The contract that changes everything has not been written yet.
